Excellent stop. Well worth the drive. Talked for a long time to the gentleman working there. Extremely interesting conversation. Learned lots about fish in Virginia. Highly recommended.

Really cool facility perfect for family visit. Operator spoke with us about the fish, where they stock and how it works. Spring creek hatchery that is gravity fed, very unique. Houses over 175,000 trout, mostly rainbow but some browns and brook trout as well. Check it out if you have time when staying at campground or just driving through.

You will see thousands and thousands of fish being raised for release for the fisherman in the area which is great

We found the hatchery when in Montebello for some hiking. Built in the 1930s it is one of the prettiest hatcheries we have seen. My 7 and 9 year old sons loved walking around, feeding the fish and discussing the DNR. Definitely worth a stop.

See how trout are raised. Talk to employees when they are there. Feed the fish from food from feeders. Nice atmosphere. Nature trail nearby.

The kids loved to see the trout. Don't forget to bring quarters for the fish food machine! It would be neat to have a little more data about the hatchery provided to visitors, but it was a fun little trip nonetheless.

After visiting Crabtree Falls, I just drove a few more miles into the Blue Ridge Mountains to see this state fish hatchery. I did not know what to expect, but I thought that it was so cool that they raised trout to go to all the trout waters east of the Blue Ridge and north from Amherst County. They also have a short trail on site which was enjoyable. In the back, there is parking for those venturing onto the Appalachian Trail and going to Spy Glass. I would not make a special trip to see this hatchery, but if you are at Crabtree Falls, it is a good add-on.
