We had a great day on a rented pontoon boat - stayed until 4:00 pm, which included towing two teenagers on a tube - and they loved it! We had hotdogs on the BBQ on the boat. There was even a bathroom – a tent-like structure in the back, and it worked fine. Great views of the shoreline and the landscape as we cruised around, from one end to the other - and even though this was in late September, the water was warm enough, and there was a bit of color on the leaves - a very nice combination.

We come up to this state park maybe a couple times during the summer . Today before going to the beach we adventured on the trails in the park. All together you can hike about 7 miles. There is a plethora of deer living within the park, we happened to see three today. Wasn’t to busy for a Friday which was nice. The water is way more clear and clean than at smith mountain! 7$ vehicle entry and 3$ for weekday, 4$ for weekend swimming at the beach. This park is separated out nicely between the cabins, beach area, boat launch and kayak rentals and pavilions to rent for get togethers. They have a plethora of camp grounds. Bathroom facilities have always been really good at this state park so you won’t be disappointed. The staff is pleasant and the grounds are very well maintained!

Perfectly kept, easy to navigate, great spot. We were passing through on I 81 South and arrived late in the afternoon and so weren't able to see all the amenities but can only imagine. Level sites, gravel, D Loop shaded with pines, easy pull through sites. We will absolutely be back and stay a few days next time!!! Highly recommended.

Had to wait almost a hour before we could get I nto the water due to lifeguard. Wouldn’t stop talking to her friends, kept getting distracted. We asked if we needed wrist bands she said no, then yells when we get in the water to get out and go buy one. Proceed to go buy one and they said it’s a hour wait to buy one due to the line. By time we would of bought wristbands it would of been time to leave.

Picnic area was empty when we stopped for an early lunch. Pleasant until a worker came by on a smelly machine, spraying for I don't know what. Campground was very crowded with zero privacy. $7 entrance fee seems high.

The best State park campground ever. Beautiful area, plenty of lake activities, nice sand beach, well marked and maintained trails. Loaded with deer. Bathrooms and showers were spotless. Spacious back in and pull through sites. We stayed 3 nights in a 30 ‘ travel trailer. Quiet as can be, Just 2 miles off of I-81. Too many other amenities to mention. Check their website.

Beautiful park, well maintained & clean. Friendly camp host, clean shower house, plenty of hot water. Nice swim beach with pretty view and clear water.
Easy to access from the interstate.
The only downside of the campground is the spacing of the sites in the D loop. Very close together, with zero privacy between sites.

Claytor Lake State Park is my wife and i's favorite destination. The spaces are nice and user friendly. Even though there is no sewer hookup except dump station it is still great great! Swimming area and trails and fishing are so great ! Grandkids love it too! Very family friendly.

Stayed there 3 times this month. 3 nights, 1 night and 5 nights. Clean, neat and roomy sites. We had water/electric site 39. Excellent. Couldn’t ask for a better staff!! Clean restrooms, hot showers, excellent hiking trails! Off season so shop was closed while we were there. Great maintenance going on so grounds looked excellent! Will be back again!!

We have not been in this park for over 10 years, and we had a wonderful stay. The site is large, gravel base, only slightly not level, with 30 amp and water available. We enjoyed the trails in the park ... all very well marked. Shower facility well maintained and had private showers with hot water, hooks to hang things, and a place to sit to put on your shoes and socks. Camp host and rangers were very friendly and helpful.

We will be camping in the RV section next week with a pop up. Is there enough room for us to also set up a screen room tent on the site?

We have a 40’ Fifth Wheel and we were looking at sites in D Loop. Wondering if we would fit into this Site? And what about maneuvering through the park/campground to get to our site? We stayed here 18 years ago in a 26’ Travel Trailer without difficulty but this is a much larger rig.

I tent camped. However all the roads are tight and hilly. I think a 40 footer would be a challenge. Best bet would be to call the campground.

Can we rent a pontoon boat for the day? if so, what is the price range?
Written August 10, 2018
I don't know if they do pontoon boat rentals or not. I want to think they don't. Call and ask or search on the VSP web page for their park's details. You can get lots of information on activities and rules there. It is a great place to visit or stay a while.

I think it is pet friendly since I believe dogs (unsure of other pets) are allowed in the camping area I looked at. I haven't taken our dogs there yet, but noticed it said dogs were allowed in that area.

We have a 32 ft Class C and we tow a trailer. We fit fine in our pull through spot. I do believe when I booked it said 35 ft for our site. I called and they said we should fit if not there is over flow parking. A large RV would fit in the site we booked but I would call and ask.
