I was not very impressed with the old building. The whole downtown area is a bit dull. There are homeless everywhere, and it was a bit sad to see that.

I went there during my layover, and I was done after 20 minutes of being at city hall and the area around it.

A unique architectural building built in the '30s make the outside interesting to look at. There are a couple of other buildings nearby on the south side from about the same time period. The visitors center on the first floor also make this a reasonable visit. The visitors center is quite large and filled with information for the area (not just Houston). You can even buy souvenirs there. The desk is staffed to help you find what else to do in Houston.

This 1939 building is full of artistic and architectural items that depict classical, Texan and southern motifs. For example, above the lobby entrance is a stone sculpture depicting two men taming a wild horse. This represents men uniting in government to control the chaotic forces of nature. The plaster cast for this sculpture, and many other friezes around the building, were done by Beaumont artist Herring Coe and co-designer Raoul Jossett who designed several other Texas sculptural landmarks.

Ok, if I have someone visiting Houston, one of the last places I'm ever going to take them is city hall. The building itself looks like it was designed by a Soviet architectural bureau. But, wait, there's more. Right next door is a park where it is politically correct to let all kinds of vagrants hang out and believe me, you do not want to be anywhere near here after dark. It gets better. Often, you will find every welfare and government-sponsored group you can think of having either a protest or a festival on the grounds. Sometimes, you can even be treated to a class-warfare spiel by our mayor. Why anyone would come here is beyond me.

Go inside and have a look, it is worth it.
The security people are very helpful and told us about the free green bus that does the loop around the city.

SO if you wantot catch a corrup politician, or catch a glimpse of a over paid city official, WOW, yo hvae come to the right town. If you act quick you might see Mayor Porker, the Queen of Special Interest politics, A rare site, if you catch her. Maybe you can even see her with the special interests paying her off.
In the Texas political dictonary, if you look up the word "hypocrite", you can see her picture.

The building is nothing special but it is the seat of our local government. The reflecting pool area is particially shaded and is often the site of festivals and other events. It's nice that the building is lit each night in an array of changing colors.

Great visitors center. I highly recommend that any visit to Houston starts here in the 1940's style Houston City Hall, from the entry lobby and intricate detail of the inlaid city seals to the vast area of good area information in the visitor's center.
