To start, Popcorn Sutton was a friend of my uncle's since childhood. They grew up making moonshine in the North Carolina Mountains. To hear of his lifelong battle againts the IRS and the police, it is sad to know they forced him right off of the planet, only to then take his name and his passion and try to use it for their own. What a bitter taste that likker must leave in their mouths as they sip from his "so-called" original small batch recipe of only 88 proof. Legends deserve remembrance, but not this way. I was glad to see the company bought by Sazerac, and hopefully they will take his name out of their brands.

This needs to be taken off TripAdvisor, it is no longer there. Unfortunately nobody else has informed the site, so it took us driving way out of our way to let you all know.

Can't say enough good about this place. Please go there and support this local business. It was a little hard to find because it was not what we were expecting it to look like (looks like a warehouse back off the road). Walked in not knowing a single thing about Popcorn Sutton, or that there was even such a person! The employee, wish I could remember her name, young blond haired lady, was so very informative, and really teaching us about Popcorn, and about Moonshine! We have been on many other tours like this & had the samples, but nothing was as personal, and warm as this place. Will go back every time we are in Tennessee!

While visiting the Smokies, the couple with us told us about this man named Popcorn Sutton, a legendary moonshiner. We decided to check out his distillery in Newport. Upon arriving we were greeted as we walked into the shop. I asked if they did tours, as it was a small gift shop (nothing fancy) and he said sure he'd give us the nickel tour (free). No cameras were allowed in the plant and the tour was very informative and the history of Popcorn was interesting! P.S. I love how Popcorn got the final word, and if you take the tour you too shall see! Then it was onto sampling the goods! We each was allowed 4 shots of our liking for $5. The samples were generous, unlike those you receive downtown Gatlinburg. Definitely worth the trip for a cheap history lesson on moonshine and a legend.

I've long been a fan of Popcorn Sutton, so for me to visit his Distillery was like a trip to sacred grounds for me. The tour (which was free as long as you call in advance) was awesome! It was nothing short of amazing to see the legacy Popcorn left behind not to mention buy some of the moonshine made legally from his distillery.
