The Log Lock Up was built in 1872 when the first permanent policeman came to town and was used until 1960. It will take a little effort to locate as it's not on the Main Street.... when you arrive you will notice what looks like two vacant blocks of land next to one another. BOTH of them have lock ups on them. One is a newer design and no doubt the lock up that replaced the wooden cabin after 1960.

I was told by a local that the police station was here once... on the corner block where the newer of the two lock ups is.

There isn't a lot there to look at...but you can walk through the area at any time. There are no restrictions and it is interesting to have a look at.

Built in1872 for 140 ponds it is hard to believe it was still being used as a lockup in Warracknabeal until 1960. Very solid log construction. Even the floor and roof are logs. I doubt very much if there had ever been any escapes. Interesting small piece of history which is worth a look at when visiting Warracknabeal.

Interesting remnant of our past and actually in use as recently as 1960. This little lock up sits in an otherwise empty block within the town and is open daily. Entry is free. It is dark inside with no lighting other than the natural light which seeps in through the one small barred window and gaps between the logs. Well worth a visit.

This and the nearby Fauna park are well worth a visit. The family had significant history around the Warracknabeal area so this was a particular treat.

I took my 9 year old to see this as part of our educational/history weekend away. It is only a very small lock up but the history behind it is worth it. My son didn't want to go inside because he wasn't sure what was inside!!!! Great way for young kids today to learn some history.

Quite amazing that it was used so 'recently'.
Some seriously solid construction that's a fascinating bit of history
Worth stopping for five minutes to have a look if you're not in a hurry
