PUFFING BILLY OPERATES DAILY EXCEPT CHRISTMAS DAY. Puffing Billy is Australia’s favorite steam train and one of the finest preserved steam railways in the world. This century-old steam train continues to run on its original mountain track from Belgrave to Gembrook in the magnificent Dandenong Ranges 40kms east of Melbourne. Puffing Billy was built to serve at the turn of the century and is a genuine relic of our more leisurely days. The Railway is the major survivor of four experimental lines used to develop rural areas in the early 1900s. Puffing Billy Railway is now a major tourist attraction and operates every day except Christmas Day, thanks to the tireless efforts of more than 900 dedicated volunteers.

Old tourist trains still operated by steam. Interesting as we have never seen it. The ride is relaxing, not too many people, may be not at busy hours. It is not very fast and you can enjoy the view. Please note that passengers are no...More

Our high expectations were dashed somewhat as there was a tee across the line and so we only got about 20 minutes up the line. But what we saw was interesting. Might try again one day.

Went on puffing billy twice during my uni days and another when I was back in Melbourne visiting with my husband. I have always enjoyed dangling my legs while sitting on the ledge. The right hand side seems to have better view. Nice experience especially...More

Travellers are no longer allowed to dangle their legs outside due to safety concerns, which I completely understand, but it's a point I wish to clarify for anyone who may not have heard about the new regulation. The views can be nice depending on which...More

My wife and I took the Puffing Billy Steam & Cuisine, with a 3-course lunch in a special dining carriage at $103 per person, which took us from Belgrave to Lakeside (Emerald Lake), with a short stopover, before turning back. The journey started at 12.30pm...More

When or where can you dangle your legs out of a window in a proper steam engine as you are going through lush rainforest. It is an awesome adventure and run by volunteers.

You can buy a ticket at the station. Try to be there 30 minutes before train leaves. Should not be a problem.
