Xishuangbanna is a really nice place for families. You can enjoy the warm weather and sunshine even during the winter. It is really a wanderful place for we northerners. My daughter have never seen selva, so she became so exciting when she saw the tall...More
I think those who have positive comments highlight the right things, but I don't feel this is a worthy place for a trip unless you already will be coming into the area. It is scenic, but the opportunities to hike around the beautiful areas without...More
The city has developed into a very popular tourist destination of China. It is located at the Mekong river. Winter is warm and dry, so probably the best time to travel. Flight prices around Chinese spring festival are very high, so avoid this time of...More
A beautiful natural area. While we were there they called the peacocks down to be fed. Scores of peacocks flew down from the trees surrounding the lake. It was a breathtaking sight. You can walk the trail (we did) if you are up for that;...More

Greetings. I was there in February. Here are your answers. I would suggest staying across the Mekong river (shown on maps in Chinese as the "Langcan" River) from the main town. The town (which is called Jinghong, in Xishuangbanna province) is a bustling and very loud place but really interesting. If you google map, you'll see plenty of smaller tourist hotels across the river to the immediate northeast of town. I was comfortable there. Beware, unless you speak either Chinese language you will find NO ONE ANYWHERE who speaks English. I don't speak Chinese and it was huge fun working that out. The most "must visit" experience I had was a one day trek out into the mountains and local minority indigenous villages with a wonderful guide named Wenyan Lai (she calls herself Sarah) available through the internet at "Forest Cafe". Local Transportation around town is crazy cheap. The bus is 2 yuan (40 cents) and you have to figure it out. Or you can take a TukTuk for about 5 times that price, the back seat of a motor scooter for 7 times or a taxi for 30 times that. The town is flooded with ATMs. I spent 5 days there and that was plenty. Taking a local bus to a nearby village or town is a wonderful thing to do too. If you like markets, there are tons of fresh markets to find. And there is a wonderful night market with loads of street food that gets going at dinner time just on the west end of the bridge. Have a great trip.
