Affordable and Informative!
Jul 2021 • Couples
Stopped by on a whim and was pleased by the low admission fee- just $7! Four floors of exhibits with a ton to look at from the history of different animals in Pennsylvania to Civil War paintings and artifacts. Could spend hours here! Front desk was very welcoming and informative.

Start on the top floor

What a great state museum! We took our sons for a brief (because it was close to closing time) visit to the State Museum, and we were all impressed. Because we had limited time, the woman at the front desk recommended that we start on the top floor where the displays of taxidermy are located. That was an excellent peice of advice as the displays are truly beautiful and not to be missed. We were able to get into the museum free of charge with our ASCD family membership. We did have to pay for parking in front of the museum.

We went to the Museum after going to the State Capitol. We definitely needed more time there so we will have to go back another time.

The museum is next to the Capital and a must see if visiting the city. It is several floor of exhibits that primarily focus on PA history.

So glad that the museum was able to reopen. We found it very interesting. There is something of interest for everyone. This is a well-kept secret - more people should get a chance to visit this super museum!

Love going here because it reminds me of being young and going on field trips (in the 90s). It's super nostalgic because nothing has changed and they could really do with a makeover.

All Things Pennsylvania
Feb 2020 • Couples
This museum has been here for many years but still offers an excellent overview of all things Pennsylvania. Spread out over three floors in a circular pattern, it’s easy to navigate with exhibits spaced out in a comfortable manner. Overall the museum is very clean, nicely maintained, friendly/helpful staff with the exhibits professionally done. Our favorite was the Pennsylvania Turnpike exhibit.

Admission is reasonable ($6 senior) plus $3 additional for the Planetarium show. Disappointed in the constellations planetarium show as it was too complex/detailed for most attendees. Kids next to us were talking amongst themselves the entire show as they had zoned out the first 5 minutes. Recommendation: keep it simple. Like others, I thought the museum was lacking in Revolutionary period history when you think how pivotal Pennsylvania was in our nation’s founding. The vending area cafe wasn’t adequate - items missing in machines, lack of adequate choices and no Coke products. If driving, recommend the South Street parking garage - only 3 blocks away. Very nice museum and a great way to spend 3+ hours while educating yourself on all things Pennsylvania.

Visit to another State History Museum
Jan 2020
My wife another added another state history museum to our ever greater list. We appreciate the states having these museums as it helps understand its history, culture, and geography. Pennsylvania's did just that. My only surprise was the lack of any Revolutionary War presentations. With the state's position with the founding of our country, I thought there would be more. But three floors of displays, it took most of the afternoon to get through the museum. Worth the stop, keep up the great work.

Interesting Museum, for history, culture, natural history and economy of PA
Nov 2019
Excellent museum in downtown Harrisburg: staff were great and you get to cover both the history/wars affecting Pennsylvania, the natural history of the area from the time of the dinosaurs, up to modern day economic and cultural contributions of the State. Very well presented, with different topics on each floor. Well stocked gift shop for mementos of your visit.
