Small museum

A small museum, just two rooms but interesting and worth visiting if you have a spare 30 minutes, my kids loved the clocking in machine.

Great Overview of the Village of Frome
Sep 2018 • Friends
In September, we were very fortunate to have a “hosted” trip through the English countryside. A very good friend, and board member, picked us up in London (after some short business meetings), and drove us out to experience “her England.”

We started in Frome, and ventured out, then back to Frome for lunch, after which we stopped into the Frome Museum. While our friend had been very good, at filling in the details of the village, this relatively quick stop into the Museum, helped put some of the details together.

We were warmly greeted by one of the curators, and took a brief tour of the small museum. As mentioned, even with the “local guide,” a few gaps were filled in for us. I can imagine that for a visitor, without the guide, it would have been essential, for complete understanding, and enjoyment of the village.

If visiting Frome, I would recommend this as the very first stop.

Stopped by the Museum early Saturday morning and were welcomed by very friendly curators. They were very knowledgeable and gave us a swift account of Frome history and advised us of places to visit. So, had a lovely Sunday trip out to Nunney and Mells.

Good introduction to the history of Frome
Aug 2018 • Couples
This museum is housed in an angular building on a difficult site (inspired by the flatiron building in New York?). It isn't particularly big but it contains a lot of information about Frome and its history, particularly its past industries. There's a good selection of booklets on sale if you want to find out more about a particular subject.

Located in the heart of Frome. Excellent display of the history of Frome and surrounding villages. The staff, all volunteers, were informative and most helpful. Well worth a visit.
Free entrance.

I tried to visit the museum on a Monday but the door was locked. There was no information on the exterior as to opening times , admission fees or contents.

Small but worth a visit
Jul 2017 • Couples
Had some time to kill last Saturday so called in for a look. Basically just two rooms, but full of local mining and brewing exhibits and information. Interesting time line charts and a small selection of well priced, pre-loved books. Lovely staff. Recommended if you have half an hour to kill whilst the wife is shopping.

Nice little museum with enthusiastic and knowledgable volunteers

We visited on Saturday morning and it was a little delight. Had no idea of the industry previously based in Frome nor of the connection between Siegfried Sassoon and Christina Rosetti. The dedicated volunteers on hand were very informative and there are changing exhibitions as well as the static displays. I would recommend a visit.

Frome History in a Nutshell
Apr 2017
Frome is an up and coming town these days, and it's museum, tiny as it is, has a very good insight into the town's past. The staff are very helpful, friendly and knowledgeable about the town. There is a very interesting display of the Frome Operatic Society's history, with costumes for the children to try on. I do feel that more funding could make this into a far better experience, and a more "modern" approach would benefit the museum too. Years ago museums were fusty places with whizzened curators....this is not the case with Frome I hasten to add!!! But.....with better use of space, better lighting and a bit more inventiveness this could be excellent. I went to Trowbridge museum a few weeks before ( Trowbridge is a town 12 miles approximately from Frome), and I visited Radstock museum the same day. Of the three Radstock is excellent, Trowbridge very good, and Frome good. What Frome needs is the same attention that Radstock has had. The information and artefacts are good but not presented in a 21st century format. Frome has a wealth of history, greater than either Radstock or Trowbridge I would say. The town is reinventing itself and becoming a magnet for visitors, but I don't feel the museum reflects that. Perhaps a more up to date and younger approach could inject a bit more life into what is essentially a potentially very good museum
