Overview
More
Grassy Hill offers a 360 degree view of Cooktown, the Endeavour River and the Great Barrier Reef. Although now quite heavily forested, Grassy Hill is so known because local aboriginals deliberately burnt the forest on the hill to encourage re-growth of vegetation and draw animals to the area for hunting. The landscape you see today from the top of the hill has changed little since Captain James Cook and the crew of the HMB Endeavour climbed Grassy Hill in 1770 to view the surrounding reefs enabling him to navigate a safe passage. The views today, especially at sunset and sunrise, are still as spectacular as in 1770 making Grassy Hill one of Cooktown's most popular attractions.

It was suggested by the receptionist at our hotel we go up the hill and what a great surprise we got at the top, the old lighthouse and superb views at one side over the river and the other over the coral sea. Perhaps I...More

We would not like to walk up the hill in Cooktown heat but having driven up there, we were delighted by the views over the Coral Sea, the Endeavour River and Cooktown and the land beyond the town.

If you're in Cooktown it's well worth a look, great view from this lookout. Only a short distance up the hill so it doesn't take long.

It’s a must if you are in Cooktown. We stayed at Hill Crest Guest House. It took us about 25 minuets to get there. It’s up a hill. We took our time. It’s a beautiful place. The view from top is fantastic.

Definitely a must do when visiting Cooktown. Amazing views and nicely maintained local landmark. Was extremely breezy when we went up.

Great lookout with historic lighthouse. See all surrounding coast line and the town. This was the hill that James Cook climbed in 1770 to try and find a safe passage through the reef for the newly repaired Endeavour after it had to be grounded in...More

Absolutely amazing views over the inlet and ocean. We went up early morning and had the place to ourselves. Would have liked to have gone up for a sunset visit but was alittle too busy.

We arrived just before sunset and the view was spectacular, with 360 views, worth the trip up the long and winding road. Perfect for an afternoon drink.
