- Helen ChanKaty, Texas22 contributionsBeautiful scenery! The dungeon is amazing! The park offers beautiful views of the rugged coastline. If you are lucky, on a good weather day you will witness the most beautiful sunset and sunrise! There are horses in the pastures nearby. Great spot for pictures! Overnight dry camping for free.Visited June 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten June 23, 2024
- wigsyHamilton, Canada606 contributionsGreat viewsComing down the other side from the Bonavista lighthouse is the Dungeon Provincial Park. It is free and has magnificent views of the shoreline and a view of the blow-hole a unique geological formation. We also saw a whale there offshore our only whale sighting in the 3 days in the Bonavista area. Definitely worth the visit.Visited June 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten June 26, 2024
- MissLaFlammeFredericton, Canada824 contributionsabsolute must-see when visiting the east coastDungeon Provincial Park is an absolute must-see when visiting the east coast of Newfoundland. This park features one of the most unusual and stunning natural phenomena you'll ever encounter. The main attraction is the spectacular sea cave with a collapsed roof, creating a unique and dramatic natural archway. This geological marvel is carved by the relentless forces of the ocean, showcasing the raw beauty and power of nature. The surrounding cliffs and rugged coastline offer breathtaking views and fantastic photo opportunities. Whether you're a nature enthusiast, photographer, or simply someone who appreciates extraordinary landscapes, Dungeon Provincial Park promises an unforgettable experience.Visited July 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten July 7, 2024

Wasn’t sure what to expect but completely pleased we took the bumpy dirt road and dodged the community pasture animals.
Spectacular rock formation lashed by the waves. Walk around it to appreciate the unusual feature.
Look out to sea too. The rock chimneys are wonderful. You may even see whales nearby.

This is between Cape Bonavista lighthouse and Spillars Cove. The views are quite spectacular and you can drive right to the “dungeon” . Be sure to visit Spillars Cove. I would visit the lighthouse, take the road through to the park and then continue on to the road that will take you to Spillars Cove. It is a short hike out to the views in the picture I posted but the views are jaw dropping

I don't think I'd drive all the way to Bonavista for this, but if you're in the area anyway, you should definitely stop here. It's beautiful. The town of Bonavista is worth visiting, and Dungeon Park is only a 5 minutes from the lighthouse..

The park is just a short drive away from Cape Bonavista and the Elliston puffin colony. The coast looks beautiful with 9ts unique sea stacks and arch formations.
Please be mindful when driving though. It is unpaved and potholes are deep and span both directions in some points. The highlight of the park is the arch formation and that hosts an amazing view of the ocean, but sadly on our visit, it was raining hard and was a little foggy.

Spectacular cliff and ocean views and stunning landscape. Some horses at the entering road invite children to stop and pet them. Overall a nice in-between-stop, however, not the half-day activity I was hoping to find.

This is a place with INCREDIBLE SCENERY not to be missed! There is a sea cave where the top caved in and left a beautiful crater. Also, scenic views of the coast and some hiking trails.
If in the area, definitely worth the stop!

Do not feed the horses and cattle on the Bonavista Pasture ! This is the community pasture , not a petting zoo. We , livestock owners do not want to contend with sick animals and an emergency vet. visit

Dungeon Provincial Park is a very small but scenic park near the tip of Cape Bonavista. It's main drawcard is that it contains a collapsed sea cave with two natural rock archways. The hole (or ‘dungeon' as it’s called) was once two sea caves that were side by side, but over time the pounding sea eroded the sedimentary rock on the ocean side so much so that the roof of the caves collapsed, creating a large sinkhole. I imagine that as Mother Nature continues her work of pounding the coast with her waves, the two archways will eventually collapse and form a sea stack.
On the grand scheme of things, it’s not one of the world’s great natural features. But is an unusual natural feature to stop off at for a quick look, and a photograph. To me it looked a bit like a giant skull. There’s is a small picnic area just by the sinkhole, and there are spectacular views of the rugged coastline on either side. You may even have sheep and horses grazing in the grassy fields nearby.
Take care, though, especially if it raining or foggy. Close to the edges of cliffs are not the safest places to be!

We have found this to be a great place for photos and natural scenery that you expect to find in this beautiful province. We've seen beautiful waves crashing off the rocks and whales breaching off the coast both times we have visited. You can just sit on the grassy area and watch nature do its thing. I consider this something not to be missed if you are in the area. The dungeon carved rock itself is really impressive and beautiful. If you are visiting Bonavista then you definitely want to tag this on to your trip. This can be a super quick stop of a few minutes if you just want to drive the road and just stop at the lookout over the carved rock, or more if you want to just sit to take it in.

A great natural beauty that you can drive right up to for free. About 10 minutes outside the center of Bonavista, you can gaze at the beautiful rock formation that took nature thousands of years to make. It is worth seeing when in the area.

Camping is not permitted at Dungeon, but I believe you can camp at Elliston Municipal Park which is very close.

Is the park really closed on Sunday? Or is it just a visitor center that’s closed but park is still accessible? Thanks!
Written July 1, 2018
This area is always open. Drive through and view as it's self guided tours. Plus there is no parks closed in this area on Sundays. As a bonus Canada Day attractions are free at Ryan's Premises and Cape Bonavista Lighthouse and Mothbegger Plantation

Is there any way to get inside the "dungeon?" I'm a photography enthusiast and I'm planning a trip to Newfoundland for the stunning views. I'd really like to get a photo looking up from inside the "dungeon." I'd really like to know how feasible that is or if it's even allowed.
Written June 18, 2017
there is no access, and I am not sure this is permitted. if so, you will need some rock climbing gears and someone at top to help you.
Written June 19, 2017
AS long as you keep it on a leash. Provincial Park regulations for sure, but more importantly the viewing area is open enough for a dog to get through and its a long drop!
