- wigsyHamilton, Canada606 contributionsMust seeThe drive up to the lighthouse from Bonavista is spectacular. The scenery is stunning, ocean and cliffs and islands. On our first trip the we saw our only iceberg there way off shore. The island has puffins on it and is a quieter alternative to Elliston. One day we only saw about 6 but the next day we saw hundreds, it is all about timing. Lovely stature commemorating the landing of John Cabot in 1497. The whole area is a wonderful place to see the sunset in the evening. Highly recommended.Visited June 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten June 26, 2024
- MissLaFlammeFredericton, Canada833 contributionsAn Unforgettable Wildlife Encounter at Cape Bonavista LighthouseWe visited Cape Bonavista Lighthouse during the first week of July, coinciding with the Capelin spawn, which attracts both whales and puffins. The experience was truly magical. The puffins were incredibly close, just feet away, allowing for an intimate and unforgettable encounter with these charming birds. Surrounding us, humpback and minke whales put on a spectacular show as they feasted on the Capelin, creating a breathtaking scene. I could have easily set up a chair and watched the mesmerizing activity all day. After our visit to the lighthouse, we explored the nearby puffin viewing site and later took a boat tour in the Bay of Bulls outside St. John's. While both experiences were fantastic, seeing the puffins at Cape Bonavista was unparalleled. The proximity to the wildlife and the stunning coastal views made it the highlight of our trip.Visited July 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten July 8, 2024
- Shawn M12 contributionsPuffins, whales, & historyA grand place to visit for many reasons. We enjoyed watching whales and puffins from the cliffs near the lighthouse. The lighthouse was not only a wonderful look back on the site itself, but also on the lightkeeping families who kept the oil lamps burning. The reverence held for these people of the past is felt in this place. Big thank you to the interpreters, like Roger and Rory, who made the visit all the more enjoyable.Visited July 2024Traveled with familyWritten July 30, 2024
- Shelley FWinnipeg, Canada102 contributionsFantastic photo opsThis is a place that has such beautiful scenery, you might momentarily forget if you're afraid of heights. I shure did. Which is why I had to give it only 4 stars. I made the mistake of looking over a cliff face to the crashing waves below and lost my lunch. Not the experience I was looking for but...c'est la vie. Otherwise the views are breathtaking.Visited August 2024Traveled soloWritten August 19, 2024
- empathologyRotterdam, The Netherlands617 contributionsGo for the puffinsEven if you've been to nearby Elliston, come here to look at those cute puffins. It's a similar setup to Elliston where they're on a rock 50m from your standing position on the edge of a cliff. Less of them perhaps but it's still nice to see them doing their thing. I can't comment on the lighthouse but there's a statue of John Cabot close by that's worth a look. That said, the plaque mentions his importance in discovering the continent for the Europeans long before Columbus, though no one's quite sure where he first came to land! Still, this seems like as reasonable place as any to erect a monument in his honour.Visited August 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten August 28, 2024
- Herb IDanville, Pennsylvania199 contributionsSpectacular views and a nicely restored lighthouseIf you are blessed with nice weather in Bonavista, take a short drive or seaside hike to the lighthouse. The views along the rocky coast are spectacular and there are many viewpoints. Puffins mostly live out at sea so come in spring and summer if you want to see them. The lighthouse has been restored to its 1800’s glory, and rooms furnished with period furniture. You can climb up to the light, and this tour is well worth the price of admission.Visited September 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten September 9, 2024

Lighthouse was nice to look at, but it was the puffins that amazed us. They fly from point A to B quickly, land amongst the hundreds of puffins, and are off again. We could have watched for hours. This will be one of the highlights of our two week Newfoundland trip.

Great lighthouse visit. The interpreters inside did an excellent job explaining the history. I particularly enjoyed the pulley system. The views are also great. One of the best ones yet.

Normally people go to these areas to see the w8de open ocean. But our time here was shrouded in heavy fog and the ocean cannot be seen at all.
However as we approached the lighthouse, we were grreted by a loud horn sound. I did a little research afterwards and it is a fog horn. So while the ocean hid itself,it was still a unique experience hearing the lighthouse's fog horns.
Also nearby is a puffin colony. While it doesn't hold as much birds as Elliston's, this is still worth a visit since you're already there anyways. It is accessible by just a narrow opening from the perimeter fence.

My first time seeing such a small lighthouse. Nice scenery nearby, but the lighthouse was nothing to get excited over.
Best part of the visit was Cabot Crafts, the giftshop nearby. Lots of local made crafts with extremely reasonable prices!

Cape Bonavista is a beautiful lighthouse. We enjoyed the tour of the lighthouse, and getting to see the light at the top. The gift shop was also fun to visit. There were a lot of whales when we went, so plan to spend a while here to relax and enjoy the sights.
Make sure you bring lots of water. There was nowhere to buy water or fill up water bottles when we went, and it was a hot day.

No. It is not a restaurant/dinner theatre. It is an old lighthouse, restored to a historic period. It is a very interesting, but quick, tour through the property.

Can we get a guided tour of the lighthouse on Saturday or Sunday? Also, can you please tell us about the lighthouse dinner on the 24th of September?
Written September 21, 2017
The Parks employees are in the keeper's house and answer questions visitors have after looking into the various rooms. We did not have a guided tour, but looked at the various rooms at our own pace. We found the keeper's study interesting as he kept his flags for signalling in an orderly manner. A book was open on his desk which showed the codes of the flags. Try to uncode the message of the flags flying outside the keeper's house.
When we climbed up the spiral staircase to the light in the lighthouse, there was Parks Employee there to explain how the lights were light and how often that job needed to be done. She explained all the parts, the gears. The space is very limited at the top of the lighthouse.
This attraction is open daily, including weekends 9:30-5pm.
We found the surrounding landscape to be great for photographing - rugged, high cliffs, swirling waters, and lots of nesting puffins. Down the road from the lighthouse is the statue of Cabot who is said to have landed here.
There is information on the Provincial Historic Sites Newfoundland website for Cape Bonavista. For info about the dinner there on Sept 24, do a google search ....Cape Bonavista dinner September 24...
