What a great experience to make a typical NZ souvenir! We are a family of 4 and made a bonecarving necklaces. Roland is a nice guy, an artist and his love for bonecarving is remarkable. Don’t leave Whitianga without a souvenir made by yourself.

My husband took part in a bone carving course as part of a larger group and thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

He really fancied trying something different as part of a holiday and said that Roland was an excellent teacher and fostered a good environment that was fun and educational...with the added bonus that he came away with something he’d made too! All for a really fair price.

The items for sale in the shop were also pretty amazing and well worth a look.

Having visited Bay Carving whilst backpacking almost 20 years ago I took our two teens along to try their hand at designing their own bone necklaces. We left them there for almost two hours on the safe hands of owner Roland Baumgart (who has been there since my back packing days!). Roland gently guided and instructed them, educating them in the art of bone carving... the result was amazing. Not just proud parent amazing but actually wow that looks just like the ones you can buy amazing! So if you have a couple of hours then book a space and make your own Maori traditional necklace - you won’t be disappointed!

Me and a friend wanted to bring back home something selfmade from our holiday in new zealand so we decided to carve our own necklace. We had lots of fun and although we have zero experience with carving our results look stunning thanks to the friendly help from the shopowner Roland. Do it its worth it!
