Not the relaxing day we had looked forward to!
Jul 2021 • Couples
We were very excited about a weekend away at The Lost Spring, but the whole experience unfortunately fell well short of expectations.

To start, we had booked a couple’s massage via email a few months before visiting The Lost Spring and received confirmation. We travelled from Auckland to Whitianga especially to have a relaxing weekend at The Lost Spring, following family bereavements. So naturally we were very disappointed to arrive in the morning and be told our booking did not even exist and they were fully booked for the entire weekend, despite our email explicitly stating what we had booked.

We had to get out of the pool and go back to reception to chase up the manager after being told she would come see us shortly in the pool. We eventually got some compensation by having some credit which allowed us to get one drink and a small platter, however it did spoil what was meant to be a relaxing day, as the only option offered to us was to return in the evening for the massage, which was a disruption to our existing evening plans.

The massage experience itself also was disappointing and not worth returning to the spa in the evening for. It felt very disjointed moving between two rooms during the treatment, having to go outside in the cold after the foot soak and scrub to another room for the back and neck massage. The back massage went almost straight into some deeper tissue work without adequate petrissage warm up and did not feel relaxing as there was very little hands on body time and a lot of fussing about with equipment. Certainly was not worth the price, we have received better massage experiences from massage therapy students in their training clinics.

The Spring Spa overall felt very overcrowded and cluttered and tired, not the tranquil experience we had hoped for. The warmer pool where the majority of people gravitated towards was totally full and very noisey, so we had no choice but to retreat back to the bigger cooler pool which was not warm enough for our liking and we felt chilled.

Wish we could give a better review of this place, but really was just disappointing all around. To be quite honest, we enjoyed the spa bath at our accomodation far more than we did this venue.

The Lost Springs where romance is found
Jul 2021 • Couples
The perfect romantic date. Hot pool followed by a fabulous meal. Great cocktails and a very relaxing environment. Highly recommended especially in winter.

Expected fabulous, got average.

From the get go it didnt meet expectations.
I had made a booking online & gave my credit card details to secure, we turned up and there was no booking made. The receptionist managed to get us in and no negatives to her, she was lovely.

Yes it was busy, yes it was school holidays, but advertising a cocktail menu online and then turning up and only being allowed to order off a small list was less than ideal.

Took the plunge and ordered a list cocktail, what i got was a slushy sweet premixed drink for the pricey sum of $18!

$40 pp just for entrance to luke warm water not ideal and a pokey small changing room, just disappointing.

Sorry for a negative review but it just wasnt up to expectation.

Very Busy
Jul 2021
The setting and the pools are very nice, and was hoping for a tranquil and relaxing visit after checking out the website. In reality it was packed with people, long wait at reception and then on to tiny woman's changing rooms. With so many patrons you could not find a dry spot to put your bag down. Just added to the feeling of being among the masses. It was difficult to find space in the pool to lean against the edge, especially the hot one. The other pool was a little too cool to stay in on a winters day. I see the potential but this was not at all what I expected and would not plan to revisit.

Didnt live up to the hype
May 2021 • Family
We were expecting a more natural environment. All the surroundings are artificial rocks. The pools are not really suitable for elderly as there are lots of paths that are up snd down and steps in the pools that are hard to see. The hottest pools were really hot and had a strange atmosphere. The main pools were much nicer but not quite hot enough. We had dinner at the restaurant and two of 6 mains were not available even though we were there at 6.15 and all the other reserved tables were booked for later than us. Two of the mains werent hot. They were very apologetic and did give us free dessert, which we appreciated but overall the experience just wasnt what we had expected. $40 each for a soak in the pool, with tiny womens changing rooms.

Lovely pools but not as peaceful as expected
Jun 2021
Nice pools, relaxing, good temperature and depth range, great mood lighting in the evening. Great service poolside with food and drinks. Drinks cold, food hot - so well done to them. Beautiful surroundings. However, receptionist was cold because, upon booking in, we noticed quite loud music in reception and coming from spa area itself so we asked whether there were any quiet spots and she took offence, telling us it is part of the mood, everybody else likes it, nobody else complains, it's the way the owner wants it and "do you still want to go in?". We felt unvalued and unwelcome. We are an older couple seeking relaxation and peace. The advertising implies that's what you get. But it seemed more for young party people. We did actually find some quiet spots, further from speakers - what a pity she did not just reassure us. All the had to say was "It's a bit noisy here in reception, but don't worry- you will find some spots furthest from speakers (eg crater pool) are pretty quiet" . So it was not nice to be made to feel unwelcome just because we asked about finding peace. In the end, it was relatively peaceful in spots and we had a lovely time. Changing rooms are too small for the number of people....But as an experience, it was worth the money and we plan to return now that we know the quieter spots.

May 2021 • Friends
Was a lovely place to relax, pools were ok, to many used dirty glasses lying around.
Drinks were very expensive
Changing rooms very very small
Had to pay for lockers
$45 pp for an hour and a half in the pool is not cheap but ok……

Hot Springs
Jun 2021
A lovely afternoon out with friends, lovely experience pool's were nice apart from hoards of used drink glasses all around the pools, drinks were ok, mine too sweet for a virgin cocktail. The only downside I could see was the ladies changing rooms, very tiny for the amount of ladies trying to get changed, quite expensive for an hour and a half

The staff are extremely welcoming, the swim in the pool and the couples massage after were very relaxing. We made a day of it and also had dinner there. The meal was excellent. Looking forward to our next visit.
