Z Bend

What an amazing hike. It has ladders to make it slightly better for the difficult rock climbing sections. It is quite steep at times but it’s only a short 2.6 km return hike so take your time. You first part to the lookout is easy, then you go down further to the water which is a more difficult hike. The coolest part was going through the narrow path towards the middle, this hike is great for adventurous people who want a challenge, wear appropriate shoes and be sun smart.

Ancient Land
Oct 2020
The Outback of West Australia is the most awesome scenery in the world. The land is billions of years old.
Make sure your fit and able to get down to bottom and back up. Using a stick is good to help you get back up.
Well worth the walk.

The tight bend of the Murchison River
Jul 2021
We parked at the car park (where there are picnic sheltered areas) and from there we walked the 600 m of the moderately easy Z Bend walking trail that leads to the lookout. Along this path we could see many flowers of different colors and species. From this lookout there is an amazing view of the tight bend that the Murchison River has carved into the red sandstone of this National Park. More or less 150m below the dark brown water of the river flows on the bottom of the gorge passing the rocks that obstruct its flow. The vast majority of visitors stop at this lookout and do not go along the existing trails. Near the lookout starts a short but more difficult trail that leads to the bed of the river. We wanted to do it but due to the heavy rain we returned back after a few meters. Having done this trail two years ago, we can still confirm that it is very interesting and enjoyable, but it requires some level of fitness. This lookout is one of the most popular in Kalbarri National Park and is sometimes relatively crowded with tourists.

Breathtaking views

Beautiful views of the gorge and the fascinating landscape. Definitely worth going. Bring good foot ware as it is on uneven terrain and rocks.

Absolutely Amazing!!!!
Jul 2021
This was AMAZING! The loop was pretty cool and there was some cool formations and patters in the rocks but the Z bend was amazing. You go on this EPIC hike through the rocks and the gorge and then at the end you are literally in the gorge and it is absolutely beautiful! If you are in kalbarri you must do this!!!

Worth The Walk

Another fantastic view point of these amazing gorges. Walking down we were worried it would be a tough walk back - but it wasn’t...great trails & well with it.

Stunning views

Stunning views. Had some rain so the water was flowing along the rocks. Shame it started raining and couldn’t do the full walk. The walk to the lookout was well worth it

Must see when visiting the Park. Well sign posted and walkways provided from the car park. Sadly the flies are a menace.

Breathtaking and challenging
Feb 2020
The Z Bend Gorge is great. We took two different walks. The short walk to the lookout point with a breathtaking view over the river was quite easy and 1.2 km long and easy to tackle.
The river trail is a more challenging hike and goes down to the river. It is not a problem if you are reasonably fit and sure-footed. Good shoes and enough water are necessary.
Sometimes the trail goes steeply downhill, there are natural steps and some loose rocks. We also had to climb down ladders through the narrow gorge. It was an interesting hike and we enjoyed it. The break by the river was also nice with beautiful scenery. Although swimming would be possible, we decided not to do so because the green water would not be inviting. Back we went the same steep way, as it is a one-way trail. At 2.6 km there and back, the trail is not very long, but challenging due to the heat and steepness. Both hikes are worth it.
