Looming atop the western horizon in Castlemaine sits a symbol of justice for the Goldfields. First built in 1861 and active for over 130 years, the Old Castlemaine Gaol has seen men, women and children of all ages pass through its imposing wooden gates, the last prisoners were transferred to HM Prison Loddon in 1990. Don’t miss out on the chance to experience for yourself this piece of Australian history. Guided tours of the gaol run Friday 2pm, Saturday and Sunday at 10am & 2pm. Self-guided tours run every day between 9:00am and 4:00pm. Private tours are available by request. The Governor's Cafe is located in the former governor's house and is open for breakfast and lunch, Thursday to Sunday (closed Monday, Tuesday & Wednesday).

I cannot recommend this tour highly enough, our guide was so enthusiastic that you got caught up in it. The life of people in the late 1800 and 1900 was so harsh, but this tour helps to inform people as to how lucky we are...More

You can go here and take a stroll on your own and see what the gaol was like, but I would recommend the tour. Our guide regaled us with true stories and got the group involved as well. Well worth it.

Visiting on the long weekend there was an art display at the gaol which meant entrance was free. Even if it wasn’t it would be worth the visit.

Highly recommend this tour. Our guide Gareth (I hope I remembered his name correctly?) was very knowledgeable and engaging in his narrative. There is a self guided option but spend the extra as it is well worth it.

Well worth a visit. The history of the gaol is fascinating. I found it really worth the time and effort and easy to add to other facilities we were visiting in Castlemaine. A Lovely day out.
