Authentic Steam Railway linking historic Castlemaine and Maldon. The must do activity for all visitors to central Victoria. You can catch the train for a return trip from either Castlemaine or Maldon stations. Fun for the whole family as you get up close to a real steam train. For a touch of class step back in time to the Golden Age of rail travel when the journey was as important as the destination. Travel in luxury parlour cars complete with full bar service. Enjoy the view from the end observation balcony. Travel with driver for a small extra fare. You can even drive your own special steam train.

The Victorian Goldfields Railway is an absolute must for train fans and kids alike! The steam loco operates most of the time, just not in the summer months where it is replaced by a heritage diesel locomotive. The carriages have wonderful timber and pressed metal...More

I'd say the rating for this attraction is average to very good; carriage was lovely and air conditioning welcomed on this hot and humid day, although it didn't work on the way home? For $70 dollars each on a slow trip to Maldon from Castlemaine...More

Had a wonderful time catching the train from Castlemaine to Maldon and back again. Nostalgic ride in the first class carriage. Maree was a wonderful host. Recommended to anyone that heads into country Victoria.

Hi Belinda, At present it is not possible to prebook unless you have a group of 10 or more. There is generally plenty of room but suggest arriving at station 1/2 hr before departure.
