Great visit if you love history
I highly recommend this museum despite its shortcomings. Loads of info on the history of Saratoga Springs, the mineral waters and spas, its tourism, its gambling casinos. Small museum in size but packed with placards to read and photos to study. The ballroom can only be seen certain days of the week and certain times of day. I had to return a second time to get a tour of the ballroom. Luckily, the admission price was affordable twice. Parts of the museum have what I call the antique store smell (dust? Mildew?). I wore a mask so it wouldn't bother me.

    Jump on a tour
We like going to a town and seeing what is there (along with checking out reviews). We had no idea what we were in for when going in, but when we arrived the man taking admission suggested we jump in with a tour that was starting. The tour guide was great, she didn't explain everything, but went through the first floor and pointed out one artifact here and another one there. Really did a great job of explaining why Saratoga Springs was an important destination, and some of the people who spent time there. After going through the first floor with her, we had as much time as we wanted to explore the other floors (or go back through the first floor). The building is haunted, so just something to be aware of. Great way to spend a few hours, maybe 2-3 with the tour. Great overview of the town.

    Great Local History Museum
Date of Visit: Saturday July 8th,2023 The history of Saratoga Springs comes alive at the Saratoga Springs History Museum. The city known for Horse racing, and a history of gambling, became a mecca for the rich and elite to come to Saratoga. The museum has artefacts from many areas – industry, architecture, hotels, gambling, and the spring water that the town is known for. The museum is located in an historic building in the heart of the Congress Park. The building used to house one of the original casinos from the town’s hey day. The building is also an old manor house – and each room in the museum houses a new exhibit.

Well, since everything we found online about the museum sounded good, and the hours of operation showed it was open, imagine our surprise to get there and learn the museum is closed from late December to April. It we didn’t find out from a website, social media, or even a posted sign. We had to actually call the museum upon arrival to get a recording that finally mentions it’s closed for winter. Lame.

you learn a lot about the regional history here....fairly well done displays....a lot of empty space though, too....sr rate of $9 was ok; would have been hard to justify much more than that...kids might be bored....small gift shop had interesting things...

We love museums like this one - well organized and packed to the gills with history and period pieces, but ambling enough and not so sterile that special adventures cannot be explored by the curious.
On a rainy day in September we stepped over the threshold and into 19th century Saratoga Springs, and didn’t emerge until nearly 2 hours later! The staff are wonderful - a guided tour is provided through the first floor and the 2nd and 3rd floors are on your own (which we love!). Don’t forget to bring a cup to sample the healing mineral waters of the 5 springs located on the grounds!

If you are in Saratoga this is a must see! Be sure to pay for a tour because it is the only way you will get to see the fabulous ballroom, and you won’t want to miss it. We did the Ghost Tour, and honestly it was the best one we have been on so far. Charlie and Jamey, Board President and Director, led our very thorough and entertaining tour. It was both fun and spooky. Do not miss it!

Underestimated this stop. We were the only ones in the museum and had a private tour by the staff. Spent two hours on our visit and could have been there a couple more if we had gone earlier in the day.
