This is where the Mexican national anthem was first sung and where Emporer Maximillian was tried and sentanced to death outside the old city centre (as in the famous Manet painting).

The theater is intimate and perfect for a small orchestra or production. It is in the Centro Historico. Just walking around the area is a pleasure.

El Teatro is a beautifully preserved piece of history. The names of the signers of the Constitution are engraved in gold on the wood backdrop.

In my last visit last week I noticed that the big plaques where they told the story of how in that theater a war council condemned to death by firing squad Emperor Maximillian had been removed. I ignore why.
