Located just moments from the heart of the Cortland, NY, the Cortland Rural Cemetery gently rises northward from historic Tompkins Street. The site features 50 acres of winding drives, walking trails, interpretive signs, and labeled trees ~ amid islands of individual graves, family mausoleums, and monument groupings, and honoring the original, 19th century concept of a "rural cemetery."

My niece had to go to Cortland this weekend for an interview. While driving we passed this cemetery. It's a cemetery and there is not much to really look at.

My friend and i decided to visit here before heading to the 1890's house down the street. The grounds are beautiful, the rolling hills of green grass, the trees here and there... some graves had fresh flowers planted (thankfully fake flowers are prohibited). The monuments...More

Nice example of cemeteries of the past. Many beautiful monuments, and the walking tour is an excellent addition for appreciating the history of the place.

My cousin and uncle are interned here in a beautiful spot overlooking the SUNY campus where my uncle had started his career 50 years ago. It is a nice place to pay your respects and they take good care of the property. For a cemetery,...More

It's a great and quiet place to walk or to run, as well as a neat place for examining grave markers and old-style memorials. It isn't all history, though, as there are funeral processions occasionally visible on the grounds. Be respectful of modern mourners, if...More

Cortland Rural Cemetery is a vibrant resource for Cortland and New York State history. It's beautiful and provides many resources for exploring and learning: self-guided tour map, educational signs about historic "residents", a broad variety of trees--many marked by species. CRC encourages walking and exploring...More

Fantastic cemetery for those who like to visit old cemeteries like I do. What sets this place apart is the excellent signage throughout the cemetery, making the place a comprehensive field trip. The signs explain historical events of the area using the tombstones as detail...More
