Seems everyone has heard of Bosque del apache nwr as a good place to see the migratory Sandhill Cranes but few have heard of Bernardo. The advantage here is that you can get much closer to the birds, there is no fee and no crowds....More

We were told by some locals that this was a place to at least drive through. Sometimes there are more sandhill cranes here than there are at Bosque. It is a much smaller park and does not take as long to drive through. Of course...More

We visited in early February 2017. The cranes seemed to have mostly moved away from Bosque del Apache but there were still hundreds/thousands of geese and cranes in this location. It was an amazing experience to watch them swarm overhead in the fields.

This is a free drive through fields where the cranes and snow geese migrate to. We saw thousands of birds. If the birds aren't in Bosque they are usually here. Well worth the drive through. It is just a few miles north of Socorro.

Had originally gone to Bosque del Apache to photograph the Sandhill Cranes, but were not many there due to a corn crop failure. Bernardo had many fields of corn that attracted the Sandhill Cranes and Snow Geese by the thousands. Got lots of good photos!
