Having been to many of Indonesia's islands, I can give my expert opinion that the word "peaceful" is not always easily associated with this culture. I don't mean it as a criticism, necessarily, it's just that the people tend to crowd around in the crowds can be very overwhelming at times. But in the case of Gundaling Hill, there were not mobs of people trying to sell stuff to tourists, nor were there mobs of annoying tourists making a lot of loud complaints. This is a peaceful location with an astonishingly beautiful view of Lake Toba. It's a long trip to get here, and you're still quite far from your established destination... So you wont spend too much time here. But if you find yourself in this region of Sumatra, you really do need to take a few photos, and enjoy some quality peace & quiet for a few minutes.

The wild, the mild and the extinct. Thats the view from the hill. Sibayak looks like you could touch it, it smokes away quietly. Visiting the volcano is like going to the zoo to see a tiger . But Santabong.... is actively blowing out stuff and has a 7 km exclusion zone. You can see the tormented , desolation on its flanks . Not so close, but not so far . In the other direction, alone on the flat plain, Piso Piso, long dead.
Its great exercise going up the hill/ and you can see the whole of Berastagi from the top. Food stalls not recommended. Lots of clothes shops ..., Ride a horse from the market to the top and down. I didn't , but you can !!! Price unknown.

Give yourself ample time to loiter along the way because there's a lot of interesting local life all around: people going about on foot or on motor bikes, bemos, horse carriages; shops and food stalls; farmers preparing their produce for transport, beautiful homes, gardens and hotels too... The summit of the hill itself is a landscaped garden on several levels, with food stalls and seats or benches at the look out points. When I was there, Gunung Sinabung was in activity: the view of the volcano spitting out rocks, larva and smoke was spectacular especially against the blazing setting sun.

Nice views all around, even if it is cloudy it's worth it. There are lots of families relaxing in tented group enclosures , horse cart rides around the top of the hill (50 K, 2 kilometers), and some vendors. Walking there, if you can find the short cut, is very nice, past cultivated fields and homes. The short cut is mainly a set of stairs, approx. 400 meters beyond the police station and right after a church, on the left. Ask at the tourist office on the circle. Walking takes about 40 minutes. If you miss the short-cut turnoff add another 15 minutes.

One of the nicest place to view the mountains Sibayak and Sinabung. There are lots of shops around as well for souvenirs. We were only interested in enjoying the scenery. Make sure you take pictures with the statue princess.
The air was really fresh. The area cleanliness level can be improved...some visitors threw rubbish everywhere....
There are lots of locals offering services to take pictures, ride horses and selling items.

It's quite a view of Mt. Sinabung if the sky is clear. Tips: bring a local if you ride in a car because some people will ask for money.

Free of charge. But use of the toilet (when the lady is there) is payable Rp2000. When I caught the sunrise, I didnt have to pay.

I walked here from my accomodation (~25mins) whenever I was bored and had nothing to do. Great to just sit around and watch. Can see both sibayak and sinabung (better view). Great sunset at sinabung.

Also saw 1-2 fireflies. Sunrise wasnt spectacular as it was cloudy. Sunrise ~6am. Sunset ~6-6.30pm. Gets dark quickly so bring along a jacket n torch.

If you are staying for long period >15mins to sit and watch at Gundaling, advise you to bring along a jacket. I didn't and I was freezing.

This is one the most favourite places to visit among tourist. We managed to be on top and take a few picture with the background of two amazing volcanoes. However, the tourism department need to be focus on how to maintain the cleanliness of the place.

I walked up the hill in about one hour, all paved road so no problem at all. You can have a great view on the active volcan and berastagi especially if you are lucky with the weather. I went there shortly before sunset so it was already empty except for some couples enjoying the view. It might be crowded on the weekends but the locals always are extremely happy of you join their pictures.
