This place is high up in the pyrenees. It is the most fantastic location and was once a refuge for various travelers centuries ago and again for World War II resistance fighters to go back and forwards between Spain and France. There is a Monument there in the honour of the fighters If you want to eat there you have to make a booking at least the day before as it is very popular. It is well worth the drive up the windy narrow road to the hospice. The walks are numerous and for all levels of experience and available time The scenery is magnificent - the high mountains rising up all around. Not to be missed by serious hikers and walkers. There are places to stay like the refuge huts but on inspection we found these to be very musty and mouldy smelling and therefore Not a good option for people with respiratory problems.

The Hospice provides a great base for a wide assortment of day walks ranging from the relatively easy to challenging. Today we did Walk 21, steep hike up to high plains/ meadow and the Hut, and instead of returning the same way (boring) continued on a gravel road which looped back to the Hospice, took about 2 hours in all. Beautiful. Lunch at the Hospice was good quality and selection, reasonably priced. May return later this week to do one of the longer walks.

I have not been very walky lately, so I decided to start easy with walk #21. An hour and blue.

Well... I was completely broken after 15 minutes. That is one steep climb!

Plus there is NO view at all.

Once up there, it is magnificent! But 21 is just the shortest way up.

I would recommend to take #22 up, which is less steep by far, #23 works too. All you need to do is get up there and from there you can just walk where ever you want to go, for as long as you feel like. There are more than one way to return to the parking lot.

Just choose a way to get up there, 21 very steep but shortest (in distance), 22 nicest scenic route, 23 a way around but easiest.

Then, once up there just take your pick, everything is marked with signs.

We arrived at around 11:00 - and the main carpark was already full (necessitating parking on the side of the access road, with many others...) - We took the 21 Trail, which was varied and enjoyable, even on an overcast day. Eating at the L'Hospice itself is also a must - with a decently varied menu of reasonably priced fare - You can reward yourself with a Grand Hot Chocolate, before driving back down the (in parts fairly precipitous) Access Road.

A must visit if you come to Luchon. A paradise at the end of a steep windy road. River us perfect for a paddle. Choose to walk or not or like us have a brilliant crepe and tarte de mirtelle! Yum. Go to this place.☺

The hike from hospice de France to Etangs de la Frèche is well marked (yellow labels). Nice view from up there, after ~700m positive elevation. Then it's possible to go higher: follow a stream (there are some blue marks on rocks), then in the grass higher up, and you end up on a path that is actually on the Spanish border. Go to the right to come down to the Hospice de France. Total elevation gain: 940m.

Starting point of many excellent walks. Small place to stay or have a drink. Parking place is filling up quickly during the day, so come early

My boyfriend and I drove up to l'Hospice de France yesterday morning and did a lovely walk up to the Col de Glere. Beautiful, cool woodland path to start opening up into the lush green valley with stunning mountain views. The walks are varied and signposted and we saw a range of (mostly French) visitors incl. young families and older couples up there. The cafe at the start of the walks is also very cute and well worth a trip in itself!

Not far from Bagneres-de-Luchon if you have a car (or a good bike), and so worthwhile. We didn't go into the Hospice itself, but the trails are well marked, and the mountains so lush and beautiful that the trails demand to be followed! Some short, some long - go for a wander or a serious hike. Wow. The Pyrenees fill your eyes and your soul.
