Walk the halls where ordinary Americans made civil rights history. Built in 1839, the Old Courthouse is a prime example of mid-19th century federal architecture. But it is two landmark cases that secure its place in history. Beginning in 1847, the enslaved Dred Scott twice sued for his and his wife Harriet’s freedom. But, the U.S. Supreme Court decided against them, ruling that African-Americans were not citizens and had no right to sue. In 1873, St. Louis suffragette Virginia Minor and her husband filed a civil suit arguing for women’s right to vote. Although their suit was denied, they brought great attention to the fight for voting rights for all U.S. citizens.

Three story old building that has been refurbished to a great building. The movie describes the Dred Scott case that was adjudicated in this building. The movie sets the tone for historic building. Walking the steps he walked is inspiring. May be a little too...More

This is basically across the street from The Gateway Arch and it’s free to walk through. I’m not sure if a docent is available to give more inside history updates but it’s really worth a look

Great exits on early St Louis, law in the early west, St Louis, and of course slavery and the Dred Scott trial. Very well preserved, lots to explore and see. Two courtrooms are restored to their 1870s and 1900s look, and the decorations in the...More

I had a wonderful time at the Courthouse. You can climb all 3 floors and just really take your time. They restored the courtrooms and it really drives home the Dred Scott case. One of the highlights of my trip

So much history and with how African American, and women's rights are so relevant right now, make the history of the brave court fights for end to slavery and give the right to vote for women a must learn topic

This was a great visit. Learned so much history. It’s not obvious what everything is, so suggest taking a tour. And too bad no elevator even to the 2nd floor. But definitely worth visiting.

The Old Courthouse is an interesting place because so many important American civil rights cases were heard there. There is access to the court rooms and information about significant cases that were heard there.

We traveled here to visit the Arch and took in the Courthouse, too. Great sightseeing and a great view of the Mississippi River from the steps.
