There was a specific reason for us to visit. Capt Charles Williams (South Wales Boarders) is remembered here. He was a student at the school we work at and a member of my husband’s former regiment. As far as we are aware no one from our 500 year old school has visited this grave before so it was very special to make the journey. The cemetery is beautifully cared for (huge thanks to the Commonwealth War Graves Commission). From here we went on visit the British Campaign Monument at Lake Doiran. Well worth a visit and the cost of a driver and taxi.

A place of peace and memories, very well kept, like all the Commonwealth cemeteries in Greece we have been visiting with our guests to see the resting place of their relatives and friends lost in the grounds of our country

This is an excellent example of British military cemetery's from the world wars. In this case WW I. There are a little over 1000 graves here from the 10,000 who died from 1915 to 1918. The cemetery is well maintained and laid out. On the day of my visit were several workers repairing markers and tending to the grounds.
I came across this cemetery while working the European Refugee Crisis near the Macedonia border. There is also a monument nearby off the main highway heading to the border and worth a stop.

We went with Roger T and found it to be a very moving experience. It portrays death yet beauty in its surroundings and exudes an air of peace and tranquility. Very memorable like most British War Cemeteries.

I travelled here to visit the grave of my grandmother's first husband Sidney Knights from Norfolk who was killed in 1917 whilst serving with the Royal Field Artillery. His daughter, my aunt, was born a few months after he died. The cemetery is simply stunning, carefully tended by the gardeners who keep it in the most perfect condition. There are 1365 war dead buried here, just one of the hundreds of cemeteries maintained by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission who do a fantastic job. Karasouli is the old name for modern Polykastro and the cemetery is signposted from the motorway exit.

A place full of heritage and very peaceful not far from Polykastro center. It reminds us of a sad page of our recent history.

Written August 11, 2018
Hi Thessaloniki is the nearest but a car is a must, about 2 hours drive from the airport, there is also a large memorial and another cemetry at Doiran about 40 mins farther on, both are well worth visiting
