- MKTBETopeka, Kansas3,000 contributionsGreat Hiking Spot in Bustling Branson!Who knew there were great hiking trails so conveniently located in Branson? Lakeside Forest Wilderness Area provides hours of hiking/nature trails, with varying degrees of difficulty. The weekend that we visited was extremely rainy and overcast. That did not diminish our enthusiasm! Some of the more precarious trails were quite slick, but we enjoyed the challenge of the adventure! There are two routes to head down to Lake Taneycomo - The 315 stone stairs or an arm of the red route (not the red loop). Both routes afford beautiful vistas. On our two trips to Lakeside Forest Wilderness Area we were able to explore all of the trails! We can't wait to return...Visited November 2020Traveled as a coupleWritten November 23, 2020
- Kris B123 contributionsPerfect place to hikeWe started on the yellow trail and then found ourselves on the purple trail that went down hill to a ridge where we saw Lake Taneycomo. From there we ended up climbing a lot of stairs back up to the yellow trail where there was a old homestead site to explore. Overall a great experience!Visited August 2020Written August 7, 2020
- Janet GLawrence, Kansas13 contributionsRugged hike, good workoutSurprising to find “wilderness” inside the city limits; easy to moderate trails on top of the ridge, and rugged hiking as you descend the stone steps below the bluff. Scenic views of Lake Taneycomo. Needs better trail signage and directions on sections below the bluff.Visited January 2020Written January 9, 2020

Free and right in Branson! Great views. Loved the grotto. Waterfall dry in summer but still beautiful area. Lots of steps so take water and be prepared if you take certain trails for a strenuous hike

This was a nice little walk that we fit in between shows and I'm glad we did. We walked up to the Owens site and it was a beautiful area, I'm glad it has been preserved.

When the sign says if you’re afraid of heights, take heed! I did the trails but was terrified the whole time! Some of the paths are very narrow & close to the edge. The stairs are steep & numerous. We were confused by the signage several times & ended up backtracking. The views of the lake on the purple trail were gorgeous. You’re mainly looking at forest most of the time on the other trails. Stay on BLUE if you’re looking for a casual hike!

This area is located just a block or so off of the main strip. A decent amount of parking available. We hiked with Red Trail - Ridge Trail and ended with the Yellow Trail - Owen Drive Trail. The Red trail is a bit over 2 miles in length. The beginning is not too bad. The trail is not paved, but dirt, rock, and such. We felt that is got much smaller and a bit more challenging after hitting the Ridge Trail Cutoff, so you may want to take that shortcut if you want an easier hike. Also note that once you hit marker 10 you need to turn to remain on the red trail. This is not marked clearly on the trail. Look for the red paint on the trees. If you continue to go forward you will then switch to the purple trail which is much more challenging! Ridge Trail from the picnic spot to the Yellow Trail is very easy and much more wide. Yellow Trail is wide and easy the entire time. You will also pass by the Owen Homestead Site which is interesting. A beautiful area to hike. All the paths we took were under the canopy of the trees. Very peaceful.

This is a gem! We had a wonderful time walking all the trails in the park, including all the steps down to Lake Taneycomo. This is a beautiful park.

We walked on the Owen Homestead trail and the stone wall trail which circled the old homestead. You can see a couple of old buildings and lots of stonework which was made into awesome walls and garden borders. We were lucky to see some early blooming daffodils. Travel in Branson in February is pretty quiet and we felt like we were far away from town. The overlook is so pretty looking over the valley. We chose not to walk down the hundreds of steps, but stayed on the upper trails.
The parking area was large and had restrooms.

Beautiful area, the trails were decently marked. We went to the small cave, then the rock wall and the signs did not lie, that was a strenuous trek back up those 300+ rock steps!

Nice trails for a nice day of hiking. The best thing is to go down the stairs and connect the other trails to go around, so you do not have to climb back up those stairs. But anyone in shape will have no problem. I will say the trails are not marked well, they definitely need to be updated so you know which way to go. All in all, it is a fun hike.

Is the Taneycomo trail considered strenuous because of elevation changes or because you have to try not to fall off a bluff? lol Just curious before I try going there.

Is there a "nature themed" playground here? I thought I saw a picture of some tree stumps and a crawl through log on the playground?
