Excellent Small-Town Museum

My wife and I toured the Oktibbeha County Heritage Museum recently with other members of the MSU Association of Retired Faculty (ARF). We started with a short introduction from Joan Wilson, Friends of the Museum's Volunteers Coordinator. After that, we were pretty much on our own to explore the various rooms and exhibits in the museum. Along one wall in the largest room, three cabinets are devoted to sports figures of importance to Oktibbeha County (i.e., baseball player Cool Papa Bell, NBA star Bailey Howell, and NFL standout Jerry Rice). Like other cabinets in the museum, these are interesting and well done. In another room, there's a cabinet devoted to female aviation pioneer Lynn Spruill, who is vying to become Starkville's mayor as I write this. One corner in the room with the sports cabinets contains a recreation of the office of a long-time Starkville physician, Dr. Feddy Eckford. Male children in the county were often named Feddy after Dr. Eckford. A small room just beyond the room you enter as you come into the museum contains a display of preserved animals found in the region. There's much more in the museum in addition to what I've described: early county, military, home-life, agriculture, early businesses, etc. There's even a children's corner, with a wooden "firetruck" they can play in. You owe it to yourself to pay a visit to the museum if you're in the area. Run entirely by volunteers, check to be sure the museum is going to be open before you visit, as its hours are rather limited. Be sure to look around the outside of the museum before you go in, as the landscaping includes an award-winning rain garden and green-roof pavilion.

An excellent setting that offers historical and environmental lessons.

This is one stop visit to experience excellent examples of historical preservation and education as well as an outdoor design that was designed with environmental sensitivity and sustainability in mind.

Indoor exhibits provide an flashback to the past of the county and the city.

Outdoor exhibits provide an excellent example of sustainable water management and landscape design. This work has received numerous awards from the American Society of Landscape Architects and the American Institute of Architects.

Too bad they were closed when they said they would be open..

Found this museum online and thought it would be a great thing to do with our family while in town for Thanksgiving. We planned to go when they opened on a Tuesday afternoon, as advertised on the website, even tried to call the "reservation line". No one answered the phone, the museum was closed and everyone was disappointed to have missed it.

I liked the clean easy to follow displays with good information. They had a copy of a book in the day of a farmer that I had from my father.
