Wish we had more time to stroll around downtown Muskegon on a recent daytrip there. As it was, I used the map I found online to locate the architecture and public art works of interest. Hackley Park was our first stop to see the Civil Monument and statues of Farragut, Grant, Lincoln, and Sherman as well as the McKinley statue in front of the old school building. Loved the Library and Art Museum for their architecture styles. Enjoyed seeing the sitting Charles Hackley. (We enjoyed learning about Mr. Hackley and all that he contributed to the development of the city to make it a cultural center.) We saw some interesting new artworks by some terrific artists....James Clover, Alex Lixenberg, and Richard Hunt. Loved the Buster Keaton piece too!!

Pick a nice day for walking and plan a tour of the downtown area. Plenty of things to see, plenty of great places to eat or have some refreshments. The area of 3rd St is really up and coming, with all sorts of diverse offerings.

Muskegon is certainly trying to display good public art. This is not a set of rusted quasi-sculptures or painted junk as some cities have tried to do. The art on display is well thought out and heading toward some major works. All nicely done. Keep it up Muskegon!

The Hackley Public Library at 316 W. Webster Avenue in downtown Muskegon is a brilliant example of the architecture of the Gilded Age. At the main desk you can get a pamphlet for a walking tour. It tells you the background of the library and explains a lot of the things you see. We have been on national study tours with the Society of Architectural Historians, and this building is as good as any we have seen with the society. Muskegon can be proud of this historic building. Also take a look at the school board building that is not far away, across from the downtown park.

This is a pretty good effort and downtown Muskegon is improving and this helps some. What needs to happen is that the people in Muskegon need to decide that as long as we are right here on the Gold Coast, we should make it more inviting. There's no reason we can't be nicer that Charlevoix or Harbor Springs. This is an effort in that direction.
