This display, while remaining true to the “they gave their today for our tomorrow” theme so prevalent in the memorials of the area, unflinchingly commemorates the unsung heroes - the porters, stretcher bearers, nurses and those who were denied access to weapons due to racial...More

We visited here five years ago and in the intervening period much improvement has taken place. Delville Wood War Memorial commemorates the efforts that South African troops made in one of the bloodiest parts of the Somme Battle. More a place of reflection than a...More

This was unexpectedly good and moving. It's a unique combination of serene architecture, powerful sculptures and great displays with top class explanations. We learnt so much about the South African involvement in WW1 and of course the courage of their troops in the successful battle...More

This memorial and museum are really special. The memorial is incredibly moving, as it is set in the regrown wood, and the museum really informative, giving a fantastic overview of the part played by all South Africans in the First and Second World Wars. The...More

We were with a friend who’d spent a significant part of her life in South Africa. South Africans (black and white), ANZACS, Tommies, Canadians, French, Moroccans, it matters not, the slaughter was unimaginable. And lets not forget the Germans ... This place is very moving...More

A truly great Memorial to the South African troops who gave their lives for us. Set in the now peaceful wood that saw horrendous fighting in the battle. A good visitor centre and Museum - opposite the site is another well kept cemetery. Well worth...More

There are so many similar sites in the area , all immaculately kept, but this one was special to us as we found my wife's great uncle's final resting place. There is a book with the row and number of each grave just inside the gate...More

As was usual after an action with many losses and no movement of the line all the dead were buried nearby and wooden crosses placed with their service number to mark each grave. The stonework and architecture of all CWG places is harmonious and sombre,...More

Visited Delville Wood War memorial on a beautiful day. Magnificent memorial to all South Africans killed on the Somme. On of the highlights of my trip to the Somme. Situated in beautiful surroundings. Great visitor centre which is admission free. Well worth a visit.

There is something not right about rating such a memorial, but it would be correct to say it is a fitting memorial to the South Africans who gave their lives in Delville Wood and other theatres in WW1. The impressive memorial is set in Delville...More
