- Steve WArlington, Virginia126 contributionsA must-see for every Gorey aficionado. And for all who aren’t but should be!We admire Gorey’s genius and really wanted to see his house when we visited Cape Cod. We came shortly before a tour started and wisely joined in. Our knowledgeable and chatty docent made sure we received our money’s worth and then some by supplying anecdotes about Gorey, the house, how he came to live in it, what he did with it, and how he became part of the community. It was the kind of tour that makes you wonder whether you should maybe change your priorities in life. The bottom line: while one could easily spend several hours just staring at the art and knickknacks, I highly recommend the tour. And if you finish the scavenger hunt, you have my eternal admiration.Visited June 2022Traveled as a coupleWritten June 3, 2022
- thetravelorganizerTega Cay, South Carolina597 contributionsEdward Gorey was a fascinating person; his house tells his story wellThe Edward Gorey House in Yarmouth Port, the home of this aptly named author, illustrator, set and costume designer from 1986-200, is whimsically macabre. An introductory talk which, we were warned, is “not hampered by facts” is offered at the top of each hour before visitors begin a self-guided tour of the house. Even if his name doesn’t ring a bell, you are familiar with Gorey’s craft. His work on the 1977 Broadway revival of Dracula starring Frank Langella won a Tony for best costume design. A fun activity inspired by Gorey’s Gashlycrumb Tinies is to set off on a “scavenger hunt” to find 26 – one for each letter in the alphabet – “hapless children” scattered throughout the house. The circled feet sticking out from beneath an area rug in the photo I submitted for The Edward Gorey House are those of “…George, smothered under a rug” from the scavenger hunt activity.Visited May 2021Written May 26, 2021
- Craig S3 contributionsA Hidden Gem!This gem of a museum is packed wall-to-wall with illustrations, artwork, memorabilia, books, collections of this, collections of that... you get the picture. If you're like me, you've seen Gorey's distinctive illustrations all your life without thinking about the man who created them. He was a magnificently quirky individual with a way of looking at the world that was his alone. All that comes through, loud and clear, in this museum. The staff is extremely knowledgeable and very entertaining. When we visited, they started by giving a talk about Gorey and his work, then they let us roam around the house and satisfy our curiosity. Parking was easy. Advanced reservations recommended. We went at 11:00 AM on a Wednesday in September, and there were probably ten people there.Visited September 2021Written September 18, 2021

I always liked Edward Gorey's work but after seeing its breadth and learning more about the artist, I now LOVE Edward Gorey's work. Some of his work is laugh out loud funny. Tip - if you visit in the off season and have some flexibility, call first to see if there are any guided tours. Not necessary at all but the docents do make things come alive. Also small but fantastic gift/book shop. Really, go there, even if you're not sure who he was you will probably recognize the work!

Such a fascinating little museum that offers a close look at a fascinating artist. Great exposure to his work and career and offers a lot of insight into the person who was the artist, in the place he lived. He was apparently an avid collector of just about everything and so the house reflects his quirky habits and his compelling art.

During the docent's fun and informative intro to the museum, he noted that nearly every group of visitors contains one hardcore Gorey fan who dragged everyone else to the museum. That was me! I absolutely loved this small but well organized glimpse into the life and work of Edward Gorey. Of particular interest were all the odd bits the artist had collected over his lifetime, as well as examples of his eccentric wardrobe. My daughter enjoyed the scavenger hunt, which had us searching all over the house for objects representing the Gashlycrumb Tinies pitiful deaths. I will definitely return the next time I am on the Cape!

If you are familiar with Edward Gorey's work (you might be and not even know it!) you will thoroughly enjoy this whimsically creepy, fascinating museum. Our docent was terrific, and gave us a well-rounded introduction to Gorey's life before and after he moved to the Cape. A fun rainy afternoon activity.

The tour guides was interesting and knew a great deal about Mr Gorey. The exhibits were fascinating, especially the featured one on Gorey's love of ballet. I had not realized how much work he had done besides the Dracula set and the Mystery theater animations. Lots of fun and a great time

This reviewer remembers long ago reading ghost stories that were illustrated with the spooky drawings of Edward Gorey. So when driving along Route 6A on Cape Cod, it was impossible to not make a short detour to the Edward Gorey house in Yarmouth and pay homage to the artist of the strange and macabre.
Stepping inside the side door of the house itself, one is confronted with a mix of wierd and mundane. It is obviously his preserved residence, with knick-knacks all around, but it appears to has also been dressed up in places with additional odd displays, such as in the kitchen.
We arrived as a staff member was starting a group tour. We elected to not join the tour but rather to just wander around the house (first floor only) on our own. The number of items (check out his fur coat....) and photos and works of the artist on the walls were plentiful and engaging. In one room, a TV was on and showing a loop of Gorey's animated intro for PBS's Mystery Theater.
Just inside the main entrance (which is not the house's front door) is the admission desk; there is a modest fee to enter, and souvenirs themed on Gorey's works can be bought there too. There is limited free parking in the yard and a foot ramp up to the porch.
The Gorey House is on Strawberry Lane; in fact, you can see it from the main road. But the street to get there is one-way. Fortunately, our nav system knew that and directed us along the west side of the little nearby park and around it counter-clockwise to get to the house.

Edward Gorey’s detailed ink illustrations and twisted subjects (like an alphabetical, rhyming list of ways children could die in a Victorian setting) made him a favorite genius. How cool to visit his house and weird collections!

About how much time did you spend in the house?

I would agree with the others that you need between one and two hours for the tour. You can leave after th guided tour or you can hang around and do the game. You are given a copy of the drawing of the alphabet and asked to find the items in each of the rooms. That will add a little time to your tour.
