Formerly the Silver Theater, a downtown standard theater from the 60’s, the AFI is a totally rehabilitated Art Deco jewel in the heart of Silver Spring. They show old classics, hold international film festivals, feature indie films, and generally do their best to educate, illuminate, and enhance audiences’ film experience. We saw a matinee a showing of “Between the Temples,” an hilarious but bittersweet film about a Jewish cantor who loses his voice and finds renewal with his childhood music teacher, whose dream is to get a Bat Mitzvah in her old age. Suspenseful, charming and hilarious by turns.

AFI is a national resource, not just a Silver Sprig attraction. But to have it as our local theater is a special delight. Right now they’re running an Iranian Film Festival, and we’ve been thrilling to some of the best filmmaking of the last 30 years. They also have current first release hits like “The Irishman” and numerous retrospectives all the time. He main theater and both smaller theaters are comfortable and classy.

Silver Spring has never been the same since AFI & Fillmore opened up! So great to have additional options of Indie Films & exhibits to visit right in your backyard! If you're visiting, get on their mailing list in advance so you can plan ahead!

The restored AFI Silver Theatre is one of the architectural and cinematic jewels of the Washington area, revolving around its beautiful Art Deco main theater, which seats 400 (two other theaters seat, respectively, 200 and 70). The theater was originally designed in 1938 by John Eberson, one of the most famous designers of movie "palaces" in the first half of the last century -- as well as of opera houses, so much that he was nicknamed "Opera House John." The Silver Theatre does a wonderful job of supplementing and enhancing the local cinema scene; just up the street from a multi-screen Regal theater, AFI leaves it to Regal to show most of the mass-market blockbuster-type films, while it focuses on old classics, foreign films and documentaries (its AFI Doc Festival -- this year's edition starts today, June 14, co-sponsored by the Discovery Channel -- draws top documentaries from around the world). The theater is also within a block or two of several decent eateries, from an Irish pub (McGinty's) and a high-end steak resto (Ray's the Classics) to a variety of fast-food options. Makes for a great afternoon or evening of food and film!

The AFI is an anchor of downtown Silver Spring and its revitalization was an important component in the areas revival. First run films, classic films, and film festivals are offered in a lovely setting from the larger theater to the smaller venues.

I always put off going to the AFI Silver Theatre despite wanting to see many of the fabulous films they show because of the traffic and not knowing the area well. I finally got the nerve on a Saturday afternoon and I am so glad I did. Finding the theatre is easy as it is a straight shot from the Beltway. Traffic comes to a crawl as you enter the center of Silver Spring (this has happened to me every time I have driven through) but I found the major parking garage behind the theater and shopping area. It has free parking on Saturday and I easily found the theater. Across the street and behind the theatre are some fabulous restaurants too. I highly remaking an afternoon or evening of catching a film at the AFI Silver and then grabbing a bite to eat. The revitalization of the area is great.

AFI's regular run movies tend to be the same indie and foreign films you'd catch at Bethesda Row or Avalon, but they're also a cultural center devoted to film: numerous festivals, film history events and more. But in the end, it's one of the most beautiful places to go see any movie. Highly recommended!

All three theaters are very comfortable, but the old one is the most fun. We also really appreciate the range of shows presented -- from current films to festivals to oldies. Not bad food and drink either!
