We climbed this relatively short mountain on a sunny day in June. It is short but pretty steep climb - no rungs or scrambling, just stairs and constant incline. From the top, the view is gorgeous! Totally worth it. We chose to descend via the...More

This is a great family hike with outstanding views! There are some steep parts and big steps but my 3 yr old and 64 yr old mother in law made it just fine. Not many trails where you can see a view from a mountain...More

This trail is short, easy to moderate, has great views of Somes Sound, and ends at the very pleasant beach at Valley Cove, where we saw eagles riding the air currents along the cliff.

This trail is rated moderate, but the steps leading you to the top can be a bit intense. Be prepared! The views at the top are good, but the trees block much of it.

It's rated moderate - but there are a lot of steps: real steps going up from the parking lot and strategically placed rocks going down toward the beach on the far side. The view from the top is worth the climb and the beach on...More

The view at the summit is amazing. We spent quite some time up here. Wander around the summit and take it all in. Family friendly and for a small hike the view is amazing. Parking is limited.

Make a day of it on the less crowded side of Mount Desert Island and combine Flying Mountain with some swimming at Echo Lake, then Thurston's Lobster Pound for dinner. This hike had some initial scrambling/climbing which we didn't find too challenging (2 adults, 5yo,...More

This is a hidden gem on the lower west side of Acadia. I am sure many miss this because it is off the beaten path. It is a moderate difficult loop, but the rewards are awesome views of Somme's Sound, boats and homes. Really one...More

My family (50 year old parents, teenage daughters) did not find this in the slightest bit strenuous. There is some elevation gain and you need to climb over roots and on some rocks. But everything can be taken slowly. And the views are worth it...More

Lots of roots across the trail would make rough footing and there are some high steps up and down rocks to get to and from the summit. Certainly not a difficult climb but it might not be paw friendly.

Remember, the island is not that big. Pick a campground that you like best for the overall amenities or for proximity to the island shuttle bus system. Flying Mountain Trail doesn't connect to much else; I wouldn't camp... More

From the parking lot it's probably about 15 minutes to the top for a reasonably fit adult or older child, then another 20-25 down to the cove. The fire road from the cove back to the somethingparking lot is about 10 minutes.
