We went by this fort while on a harbor cruise and heard about it's history. What a story to hear. Long time building. We did not have time to make our way out to the fort for a flashlight tour.

This is an interesting military fort...Fort Gorges, former military fort built (1858 to 1864) on Hog Island Ledge, Casco Bay, ME.

More than a pretty view. Historic island and fortress in the Portland Harbor. Clear view of the island is avail@ble from visiting cruise ships.

Cool fort. Closed inside for renovations. Awesome to see by boat or long lens. Don't miss this hidden gem.

We visited by private boat and enjoyed an hour walking around the small island. Kids need to watched as this fort is not maintained. A good place to sit and watch the boat traffic; especially, the schooner. It can also be seen from the ferry...More

We visited via kayak on a Friday just before sunset, and there wasn't anyone else there except for us! Such a cool place to romp around and see a unique set of views, but not too far from the mainland.

If you're looking for a quick (1-2 hour) excursion on Portland's Casco Bay, consider hiring a water taxi to take you to the often overlooked Fort Gorges. Located in the center of Portland harbor, it provides unparalled views of Casco Bay. Given the big deal...More

Enjoyably, Fort Gorges can be seen from many points of interest along the coasts of Portland and South Portland. Don't bother looking for it on a foggy day; we were unable to visit it during the morning as it was swallowed by fog. Definitely enjoyed...More
