Sad and stressed animals
Jun 2021 • Family
The zoo houses all the animals you would expect to see when visiting a zoo. My main issue was the horrible condition some of the animals were being kept in. The enclosures are clean and upon first glance they look fine. However some of the animals were showing clear signs of stress (gorilla pacing back and forth and shaking a door for example) and most barely looked like they had a reason to live. Enclosures are way smaller than they should be, especially for the bigger animals like elephants and rhinos. Cold weather animals like polar bears and snow leopards were in open enclosures in 90+ degree weather with very little shade. You'd have to imagine that's torture for animals that naturally live on ice and spend their days plunging into freezing waters. Some ice was dumped on the ground in one of the polar bear enclosures, next to some raw meat which i assume was his meal.... the polar bear just sat upright in a corner looking at the wall and didn't go near the ice or food.
Visiting this zoo just made me sad. I haven't gone to a zoo in years and only went to show my son a zoo for the first time. I can honestly say this zoo has changed my perception of keeping animals in captivity... it really just shouldn't be done in most circumstances.

Exhibits are very spaced apart
Jun 2021
I enjoy all zoo's big & small. We visited on 6/10. There were a lot of empty exhibits. I googled walking distance to plan ahead. Every review & website say 1 mile. That is actually a drastically reduced path for walkers. If you are visiting the zoo as a tourist it is 3-4 miles. This zoo is very spaced out . Plan accordingly.

Great way to spend the day

This was a good, clean, nice sized zoo. It was a perfect way to spend half a day. Would definitely recommend!

Great Zoo! Great for all ages, including young families!
May 2021
We visited with our daughter and her family, she has two children ages 16 months and 5 years. We all had an enjoyable day including the toddler. I recommend that for groups with young children, a stroller. Rentals are available. A nice way to spend a day!

Came for the Wild Lights, want to come back for the animals
May 2021 • Couples
We came from Cincinnati to experience the Wild Lights event. I’m saddened that another reviewer encountered rude crowds. We visited on a Thursday and everything went very smoothly. The lanterns are very impressive and there are lots (70+) and the other attendees were all very polite and well behaved. The animals aren’t on display during the night time event, but the buildings and grounds all seemed well cared for. Based on our experience we said we’ll have to come down during the day to experience the actual zoo animals.

Wild Lights makes for a great date outing, or a family outing. However the later night can be hard on little ones who are up past their normal bed time. It wasn’t really an issue however because we could appreciate the few over tired kids, and be happy we were past that stage.

Wild Nights is breath-taking but with issues
May 2021
When to Wild Nights at the Louisville Zoo. The lighted displays are breath taking. Must come at dusk or a little later to see the full effect of the lights in the displays. A very unique idea and event. The displays deserve a 5 star rating. Traffic gets very bad later in the evening so plan to arrive about 6:30- 7:00 and grab a park bench and wait until it gets dark. During this event the normal zoo animal displays are Closed. You might catch a monkey or zebra out but not much more.
Now for the bad. Very poor crowd control. Very poor to non-existent security presence. We attended on a Saturday night and expected a large crowd. The majority of the crowd was families with grandparents. The crowd on this night was the rudest, most inconsiderate and destructive people I have been at an event, ever. We are not talking teenagers or young adults. These were parents in their 30-40-50 range letting their kids do anything they wanted to the beautiful animal displays. The displays are paper in nature, like a Chinese Lantern. Signs were up asking people to not touch or cross the roping, and stay on the path. Witnessed kids tearing teeth out of fish. Complained to the parents but all they wanted to do is fight.
This event at the Louisville Zoo is definitely a 5 star event with better crowd and security control.

Good zoo but some of it was closed
May 2021
I understand having to do things to maintain but there should be something posted about the attractions that are closed. Over 1/4 of the attractions had signs that they were closed for the day. Disappointing that we weren't told when we purchased the tickets. Most of the large animals only had one of each animal. Another disappointment.

Lights
Mar 2021
The lights are fun, but we would have liked to have witnessed more animals out and about. Kids around us didn't seem to mind at all. The weather was perfect. Still a good event and glad we attended.
