A must see in Louisville
May 2021
We are not racing fans of any sport, but in Louisville, you NEED to visit Churchill Downs. Fortunately they started Twilight Thursdays while we were in town. It was easy to find, easy to get tickets. The woman at the ticket counter explained the process, took my $18 and handed me my tickets. We watched my horse come in first right from the finish line. Very exciting.
Unfortunately the food was your general stadium fare, but it wasn't horrible.

I could not be this close and not visit the famous Churchill Downs. I just stopped by and made a few photos and left.

Memories

This racetrack is filled with history. So many races since the 1870s. It's become the oldest running sport in US history. As you walk into the area behind the grandstands you will see plaques commemorating all the winners of the Kentucky Derby since the 1870s. Tour guide will explain this on the 30 minute walking tour. You will also get a chance to stand in premium owner box seating areas near the finish line area. Go early at 7:30am and you will see the early morning horse workouts. 20 plus horses at a time will be out there at one time getting a run in. I even got to pet one, that is rare that happens but I got to pet one. Your not guaranteed to pet them, it depends on the jockey and if they allow it because the horse could get spooked and throw the jockey off the horse. So I thank that jockey for taking that risk, it's an experience I will never forget. To touch these animals is a feeling you never forget, the feeling of warm air coming out of their nostrils and the smoothness of their bodies, I'll never forget it.

Catch a race at Churchill Downs and visit Kentucky Derby Museum
May 2021 • Family
Kentucky Derby Museum is a must see while in Louisville. You can check out the history of the Triple Crown. Great horse racing memorabilia. Then go head into Churchill Downs for a race or two. It makes for a fun day of horse racing.

Around the Track Golf Cart Tour
May 2021 • Couples
My wife and I took this 4 hour tour last week.

Our tour guide, Audrey, was extremely knowledgeable and very personable. We could tell from the very beginning she was passionate about her job and had a reverence for her place of employment. We knew very little about the racing industry so we had many (and, yes, sometimes foolish) questions. Audrey was very patient with us and answered all of them in a professional, patient manner! She was terrific.

Over the course of 4 hours the tour takes you to every part of the track. Many of which are off limits to the general public. We especially enjoyed seeing the stables and watching the horses train.

This tour is a must for both horse racing enthusiasts and/or those who are interested in the history of an American masterpiece that is Churchill Downs.

Loved it!!

First time visit to watch races. Bet on 3 races which is a learning experience, but fun to try. Previously visited just the museum. Cool experience with history.
Wagering window employee wasn't very kind.
Beautiful day at the races!

Worth seeing
May 2021 • Couples
We stopped on the way from Cincinnati to Bowling Green. Paid only $5 for tickets with reserved seats and we watched couple of races. Place is quite spectacular and atmosphere was similar to baseball games, but more relaxed.

Surprisingly good place to bring kids

Took the whole family here on a beautiful Sunday afternoon in late May. This was the first time I have visited to the site of the world’s most famous horse race. Came away pretty impressed with the entire experience.

As long as you don’t come here during derby week, admission is only $5 per person and the atmosphere is very relaxed. Parking is free but this place is huge, so you may have to walk a bit. Saw lots of children and people just out for the experience of seeing Churchill Downs.

Lots to see here besides the actual horse races. What is nice about horse racing is the races are every thirty minutes and you have time to explore, eat, and drink in between races. After you come through the main gate are the paddocks, where you can see the horses in the next race. Don’t miss the food court on the second floor, which has very reasonably priced food, is air conditioned, and had short lines.

Iconic - ✅ Bucket list

So much fun!! We really enjoyed this iconic track. We had lunch - a delicious buffet. And watched the races from Millionaire Row. Awesome non-Derby prices. Would recommend to everyone. Bucket List ✅
