The historic district is a must see if you are interested in history. There is. Guided walking tour, but you an also walk around all the sites yourself. People are very friendly and will try to answer any of your questions. They are very well informed.

Port Union has a lot going for it and a lot still to do in restoration. Drop in and soak up the atmosphere, architecture and history of a ‘union’ built town, the first in NA.
The Newfoundland restoration workers will love a visit.
Wing Commander made 5 different stops for photo opportunities so please check out my photos.

I walked from Captain Blackmore's where we were staying, on the advice of our hosts, the few minutes into the historic district of Port Union. The district is unique, and is being well-preserved. It is a fascinating glimpse into an unusual but important part of Canadian history. Well worth the visit!

North America's first union-built town is worth visiting for multiple reasons
- get a better sense of Newfoundland's history, especially with regards to cod fishing.(and the associate union)
- see a bona-fide "ghost-town"...makes for some great pictures!
Visiting this site shouldn't take up more than hour; if driving up to Bonavista, I would highly recommend stopping here

The Factory, the workers houses and The Bungalow were fascinating places to visit. Make sure you take the guided tour inside The Factory and The Bungalow. It is an amazing place for anyone interested in the history of Newfoundland. Some people will simply be fascinated by the old machinery in The Factory and the beautiful collection of items in The Bungalow.

Port Union has a unique and important role in the history of NL. The town was founded through the efforts of William Coaker and the Fisherman's Protective Union. The FPU played a major role in breaking the grip over the merchants who controlled the price both supplies and wholesale cod fish. The FPU essentially built their own town. Fishermen could buy and sell at fair prices undermining the credit system that kept most of them in poverty. Well worth visiting the museum and gift shop building as well as strolling around what almost looks like a ghost town.

A unique part of Newfoundland's history. Community is working to develop the many historic buildings. Right off Hwy 320 and worth stopping.

The Historic town of Port Union comprises of buildings, museums, houses, and exhibits on the advent of unions, printing presses, electricity and such to this small area. It was very interesting and the museum staff we very helpful. We missed visiting the Coaker house as it is closed Mondays and Tuesdays but from the outside we knew it would be a good one.

The Port Union Historical District is fascinating on many levels - historical, architectural, economic and social. It shows what the labour movement can achieve when people work together for the common good.

The main building is nicely restored however most of the workers homes are still in desperate need of restoration. Once completed however this should be a fine attraction.

We are visiting in the area May May 21-22 on our way to Trinity and Bonavista. Is this area open for touring at that time (operating hours)? Or is it open year round? Thanks.
