I live near the Fort and visit it frequently, but rarely take time to think about what I see each time that I 'am on the Fort'. Itis home to the Army command staff college which alone has a very nice campus. The Buffalo Soldier Monument is very accessible. I enjoy driving passed the home of the younger brother of the famous General Custer. Some of the old 'Castle' part of the old prison still survives, The National Cemetary is a sight alone to see and there are still some walls remaining of the original fort property.
If you have half a day or more I would advise a trip to Fort Leavenworth.

Had not really thought about touring the fort. Thought it would be too difficult or hard to get in, maybe we would be in the way? Oh no! Their website made it super easy to get in via an online registration. I filled out our info about 9:30 pm and by 8:30 am the next day, I got a message saying we were cleared and had a 2 day pass. All we had to do was show the ID (Ks DL) I used for registration and we were in in no time. We entered through the Grant Gate. There is no visitor center once inside on that entrance so we had to find our way to the Frontier Army Museum and gathered the Wayside Points Map and other information there. The gift shop attendant was super helpful in giving us pointers. Each stop is narrated via a phone app. The Buffalo Soldier Monument is a must see and requires a walk through the park to see all of the points and see the Berlin Wall pieces. The entire tour was very interesting! We spent about 4 1/2 hours there including stopping for lunch.
The whole Fort is a city within a city. Really an amazing place. Saw lots of moving vans with families settling in.
We had lunch inside the USDB, US Disciplinary Barracks, at the Block 12 Grill. Great food!
We finished our driving tour with a quiet drive through the National Cemetery. No matter what period of time a soldier fought for my freedom, I am humbly grateful for the sacrifice of not only the soldier, but his family as well.

Beautiful Army post with tons of history, run routes, and greenery. Wonderful place to visit and learn about the Leavenworth wars, local Indians, and Black Army excellence.

Follow address for Visitors Center to get you day pass to enter. Doesn’t take long. Then go to the museum. Ask for directions if needed, I did. There is a massive collection of history there. Get you way station map from the museum and do the auto tour. There’s a few that are markers only, but you get to see the massive Active fort. The Brick Grill has food if you are hungry (it’s actually on the map). Make sure to to visit the National Cemetery and Honor those who have fallen with a moment of gratitude and pray.

Always a blessing to be on Fort Leavenworth. You do need a pay pass to get in, but it is an Army installation, so just get a day pass and enjoy Merit lake, free movies on the weekends, the museum, the historical markers all over fort, the buffalo soldier memorial park....

Wasted journey to go see the #1 thing to do in Leavenworth as you need to be a US Citizen to get access. Took our European ID, made us wait and then finally told us that we couldn’t go in. Surely they should have a sign, or at least the first person you speak to should let you know...

On a recent business trip to the oldest active United States Army post and oldest permanent settlement in Kansas, I had the opportunity to explore the installation and see the historical architecture, the old military Disciplinary Barracks complex, and the tribute to the African-American soldiers of the U.S 10th Cavalry Regiments of the United States Army.
As I explored the installation and realizing it was built in 1827, it was easy to imagine what life on the Fort must have been like during the tumultuous period of the expansion westward and the conflicts with the Native American tribes. Driving into the now decommissioned United States Disciplinary Barracks (at one point the Department of Defenses’ only maximum security prison) gave perspective to Soldiers, Sailors, Marines, and Airmen being court martialed and sentenced to serve a sentence such as Second Lieutenant William Calley for his violations of the Uniform Code of Justice (UCMJ) in his actions at the 1968 My Lai Massacre in Vietnam.
Today the Disciplinary Barracks is gone and the United States Army Command and General Staff College (CGSC) is the focus of this historically significant Fort.
If in the area, I would highly recommend visiting the historical Fort.

I was stunned by the vastness of this installation. It's huge. I so enjoyed driving around and seeing the many historical buildings and sites. Highlight was certainly the Oregon and Santa Fe Trail origins right next to the Missouri River. Buffalo Soldier Monument is also very neat. I only stopped here because i was driving through, but I am so glad I did. Very, very cool.

I'm handicapped and need to know how many guests can i take in the base with me ?

I am Air Force retired so can partially answer your question. To enter Fort Leavenworth Via the main gate you need at least one person with an active duty or retired ID card in a vehicle. The adults with out military documentation must have Identification that would allow them to fly on commercial airlines ( passports, certified driver's license, etc). If all are documented properly I think that you should have no problem with 4 or5 guests. If there is a problem as to a larger crowd you will perhaps be directed to the visitor's entrance about a block from the main gate.

Hello
We are planning a trip to see the fort in a few days from now
What is your policy for bringing a personal licensed handgun on base?
Thank you

You should probably check with the Provost Marshall to get the most up to date policy.
What is the process now of going to the cemetery
Last year there was a a 4 hr wait to even fill
Out the forms?

Yes I agree to come a day or so early to get a one day pass to not have a delay on Memorial Day. My husband and I have cards to get on Post so the only way I know is to go to Visitor Center and get the one day pass. You will need drivers license, vehicle registration and insurance information. They will want to know reason for visiting Fort Leavenworth. Hope this helps.

This Friday the 31st, 4 couples will be coming to Ft. Leavenworth and would love to have a guided tour. Does the Post offer any such tours; if so how can we get in touch to make arrangements? Would also like more info on the restaurant in the old prison remains. Any tips for a faster entry onto the post, we are all civilians and will have 2 cars. Planning to be there around 2pm. Thanks in advance for your help!

HI Debbie,
Ft. Leavenworth offers a self-guided tour. Please visit the Ft. Leavenworth Garrison website to learn more. The website appears to be down as of writing this, so keep trying through out the day.
The 12th Brick Grille is the restaurant located within the historic Disciplinary Barracks. You can get more information through the Ft. Leavenworth MWR website.
To gain entry as a civilian, you'll need to first go through the visitor control center, which is located just north of Metropolitan Ave on Sherman Ave. More information can be found on the Ft. Leavenworth Garrison website.

Are civilians allowed on post, if so , what ID etc, is required?

Good morning from Leavenworth! Yes, civilians are allowed on post, but that process is right in the middle of change. The exact date has not been released, but the projection is that sometime in February, the change will be complete. Currently, civilians enter the main gate through the right-hand lane. Anyone 16 or older needs photo ID, and you need to open every door and exit your vehicle while it is inspected. After the change, there will be an added step to the process. Civilians will first go to a station about a block down the road, park and go inside, present ID and have a criminal check performed. Then they will go to the main gate for the round of current procedures.
