About
Founded in 1919 in Independence, Kansas, Neewollah (Halloween spelled backwards) was created to deter children from mischievous Halloween antics and provide a positive outlet for Fall fun. Nearly 100 years later, this October festival is now the largest annual celebration in the state of Kansas. All of the traditional carnival bases are covered with fun rides, cook-offs, parades, live music, and fried food galore. The Queen Neewollah pageant and Great Pumpkin contests are must-sees and provide an authentic glimpse back at old timey Americana.

Purportedly the largest celebration in Kansas. The annual Halloween rite of Neewollah always delivers. Lots of activities, shows, carnival, and street food. The parades are always awesome. Exceptional weather this year on Saturday made for a wonderful event. An Independence tradition. Great venue to meet new friends, and interact with old ones.

I live int he area of Neewollah and it is a huge celebration that brings in thousands of visitors. There is concerts, carnival rides, food vendors, Thursday evening is the Doo Dah parade (adult parade, but ok for families) Friday afternoon is a kiddie parade, and Saturday morning is the Grand Parade that brings in people and bands from four states. If you are looking for a great time with a small town feel this is your event.

I go to the Neewollah festival every year. Mostly because it's hard to avoid, being in my town,, and I have such a great time. Great carnival food, the games, the people, the rides. All of it makes for such an amazing experience. You meet people from all over. Even outside of Kansas. If you're a Kansan, odds are you know about Neewollah. It's a timeless local tradition.

Really, why do people go here? So few corny food vendors with premium priced mundane food. Typical pocket gouging Carney's set up on a runway. Upgrades are needed. First, more booths like face painting and other children attractions. Second, add vendor booths for locals who make things to sell. Arts and crafts booths would make a great addition. Third, add better food vendors. This event is one dimensional and Independence deserves a multi-dimensional event.

Best time of the year! Been going since I was born. Great excuse to spend on lots of delicious food and hang out with friends. Adults: hang out by the bandstand and listen to music while eating. Teens: can ride the rides, eat, even just walking around is fun! Younger children:there is also rides fro little kids and games and face painting plus the food!
