We arrived right on closing and to our surprise the volunteer personally showed us around the museum. he was friendly, interesting and personally connected to the town which made it very personal. The museum has a very interesting range of exhibits worth stopping for, do pop in.

Very neat and organized museum. We learned a lot about the mining industry in Galena and the conditions of the early mines. Well worth our time there. Highly recommend this as part of a day trip to Cherokee County

We stopped to see it but it closed for lunch. We did not want to wait an hour for them to return. we did look in the windows and around the building. I think it looked very interesting.

I enjoy small topical museums so I had to stop at this one, which features Galena history and mining. I was not disappointed. Artifacts and exhibits were well-arranged, with signage to put items in context. One room is full of beautiful aggregates, nicely labeled. I was interested in the telephone history display and the antique cars. Many other artifacts from the late 19th century to the 1950s were present.
Of course there was plenty of mining equipment with informative labels. The model of a mining operation with identifying/explanatory labels for each component was particularly informative. It was also fun - I enjoy small scale dioramas.
There were also some gorgeous oil paintings of mining structures, painted by area artist Carole Riley. These paintings have been on display at the Smithsonian.
The volunteer on duty was very friendly and welcoming; very willing to talk about the exhibits and about area mining history; and able to suggest, and give directions to lesser known mining sites.
Parking next to museum. Free but donations are welcome. Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays from 10am to 12pm and 1pm to 4pm. There is a very nice diner across the street, if you arrive at noon (Central)

Living here in the area helps to know the spots to see. Being on Route 66 there are many interesting things to do and see. The museum is very much a part of the area, with knowledgeable staff who know all the mining history, kinds of gems and minerals and stuff

It is a little different than most Route 66 museums in the fact that it focuses more on the local history relating to the mining and the railroad that played a major role in the economy of the area. It is in the old railroad depot that has been beautifully restored. You will see displays of minerals, mining tools, railroad related items and lots of photographs illustrating the life and times through the history of the town. It has friendly knowledgeable staff! A must do stop on old Route 66.

For folks traveling on Route 66 through the few miles in Kansas, this is a hidden gem! Lots of great displays of local history, especially with respect to mining and the railroad. Located in the old railroad depot (in addition to a larger attached building) the displays are clean, well-described, and very interesting. I recommend an hour or two. Well worth your time, especially since it's FREE!

The Galena Mining & Historical Museum is a nice place to stop on Route 66 to get some local history about the mining in the area. The staff at the museum is very friendly and knowledgeable about the area. If the museum isn't open, stop by anyway for some great photo opportunities including a train engine, mining supplies, a helicopter outback, and a tank next door.

I wanted to get digital copy of the 1946 Galena High School year book. What would the donation needed to get scanned and placed on scan disk?
