Visiting this site, to me, is like visiting someone's grave site in a cemetery. It is very nice that the owners of this land make this site available for us to visit and pay our respects.

Too bad this site has to exist but it does. For the curious types, you can drive to the area and walk along a fence line to the site which is approx. 1/3 mile out there. Can be very overgrown in the summer or muddy...More

In reading through some of the reviews it kind of sounds like people think it's inconveniently located out in a corn field in the middle of nowhere. I'm sure if you were able to ask all that were on board the plane that night, they...More

This site is well kept. However, it is a 10 minute walk into a field. Path is appreciated but is very narrow and uneven. During rainy weather, forget it. Glad I went but don't recommend it for people who have trouble walking. JD.

Visited Clear Lake with many friends, who posted pics, so I figured I really didn't need to go myself. I am glad I did go. It wasn't hard to find, and I appreciated that it DIDN'T have signs pointing out where to go once there...More

Very easy to find IF you can read.....just kidding. I got these driving instructions from the Surf Ballroom's website.....& used GPS on iPhone. 1. From U.S. 18 in Clear Lake, go north on 8th St for 4.7 miles, this road turns into Grouse Ave. 2....More

This was hard to find in part because there are no signs leading you there. It is very easy to miss. Why aren’t there more signs? Why isn’t there a sign at the glasses? Also, if you walk back along the field there is another...More

It's hard to review this location as excellent, however we feel the ability to access and pay respects to three rock and roll icons, and a young pilot, is greatly underappreciated considering the historical significance of this location. Be respectful, and stop by if you...More

Visit the Surf Ballroom first and pick up an easy to follow map to the memorial site. Drive through Clear Lake, Iowa north and over some gravel roads to find the entrance marked by a pair of Buddy Holly glasses! It is about ¼ mile...More

You should also visit the Surf Ballroom - the site of their last show. It's close to the crash site.

The Clear Lake boat area has spots for parking and staying, by the way and it's not far from the downtown area. You might have checked that already but just in case--yes, there is a place if you want to stay. Maybe you might... More
