We detoured north at Des Moines on a trip from Denver to Chicago not knowing what conditions would be like in late March. We brought boots and glad we did because it was a little muddy. I've known this story for a long time but...More

The plane crash site is a peaceful place. The visitors whom we've met both times we visited (June 2014 & July 2017) were always respectful for others coming to visit, pray, grieve, or just be in the moment. There is a half-mile walk which isn't...More

Simply a nice place to visit and pay your respects to the loss of three great 50's performers and their pilot. A small memorial is there to identify the events of Feb 3rd, 1959. Buddy Holly, Richie Valens and J.P. Richardson - The Big Bopper...More

It's a must to get a photo of the glasses.:) The actually sight is a bit of a walk...in between farm fields...but there is a generous lane to make the walk.

The google address actually takes you 1/4 mile north of the site so continue past the farm your navigation takes you to. The last two roads are gravel so be prepared for that. The glasses are right next to the road and then the memorial...More

Short hike to the actual crash site. Saw a few cars that just stopped and took pictures of the glasses at the beginning of the path. The farmer who owns the land does a good job of maintaining the walkway to the crash site. Be...More

At the edge of a dirt road you will see a huge pair of black metal eye glasses. No problem parking along the road. Walk about 1/4 mile through a mowed area in a field to reach the actual plane crash site. A small memorial...More

If you are a big Buddy Holly fan this is basically a roadside stop off interstate 35 just west of Mason City, Iowa. Googlemaps will get you there, look for the big Buddy Holly glasses. Then you walk just under a half mile through a...More

It's a very nice memorial. Can't believe how long it has been! It's also very nice of the land owner to keep a path mowed to the site, which is a bit of a walk from the road. We were there during nice weather, but...More

Get your picture taken by the Buddy Holly Glasses. The drawback to this sight is the hike. It is about 1/4 mile hike at the edge of a cornfield. The land owner generally keeps the path mowed. It will be muddy after a rain. The...More

You should also visit the Surf Ballroom - the site of their last show. It's close to the crash site.

The Clear Lake boat area has spots for parking and staying, by the way and it's not far from the downtown area. You might have checked that already but just in case--yes, there is a place if you want to stay. Maybe you might... More
