This was a really fun day! The staff were really nice and the experience was great. It was a little bit farther from downtown than I realized - but going downtown would take about 2 or 2.5 hours so definitely doable if you're prepared. We live in Chicago and we actually preferred being farther from downtown because it was easy and free to park. Definitely recommend doing this!

This was a super hard day for us. We had huge storms here south of chicago and lost power. We called and they assured us it was better up there and it was. The trains, which run on electric, had issues and our train was canceled. They accommodated us by letting us kayak later. One thing to note is this is NOT right downtown in the part of the city people know well. To get from there, it was a $35 uber each way or 5 mile walk. When we called and told them not only were we behind because of the day... that we now had to walk, they were absolutely unwilling to help us out in anyway. We ended up walking and getting there. The city is not in view until you've kayaked maybe a half hour or hour depending on speed. This would be an all day event to get to the city and back especially with kids. I would love to do that, but I just don't think I'd ever book here again after the experience. I would definitely not book ahead of time. I'd take my chances and do it there or when I was more local.

I have done a self-guided daytime rental as well as the nighttime fireworks tour... both were excellent. The guides were so great that would encourage you to do something guided if you can. We brought a ten year old on the fireworks tour who got bored on the journey back to the dock but the two of us adults thought the whole thing was awesome.

Thé site says 'some athletic ability is recommended' for their fireworks tour. It says generally that I should come out on the river and relax. This is ridiculous. This was an all out effort to the fireworks and back with no break outside the fireworks if you don't keep up. Relaxing? Hardly. When they leader tells you you have to dig deep on the way back ? I'm writing this at 3:30am because my shoulders hurt too badly to sleep. I worked on my form for hours but still got drenched and used my shoulders too much. This is not a great trip for you if you don't have experience. I recommend the tandem if you have a partner so you can share the work. The wake from other boats and the 20-25 inexperienced people you're going with makes this an extremely difficult paddle. People cutting me off and ruining any momentum I managed to create made this really stressful. The jets and current from the walls of the river added to the difficulty. There are companies closer to the lake with shorter tours that you should consider if you're a novice. This one was stressful and we didn't enjoy it at all.

Fascinating way to see Chicago. Even though it rained the whole trip, our guide Mark did a great job pointing out interesting sights.
