My wife and I just returned from Florida last week and had a great time except when we visited Fort Island Gulf Beach on 12/27/19 to view the sunset as we were attacked by sand fleas. Each of us were bitten well over 50 times and the welts and bites are still appearing. I think the state or county should put warning signs up on the beach so people are aware of the discomfort these things can cause. We were married on this beach also and we now are concerned about coming back and visiting considering what can happen. Sunsets are beautiful though but not worth the bites.

After visiting Three Sisters Springs, we had a few hours before heading back to our cottage. The Fort Island Gulf Beach was a convenient place to stop. On a Tuesday afternoon, it was surprising to note that most of the parking spots were taken. We took one of the last ones.
The beach was clean. The water was clean and calm. There was no life guard (I am not sure if that is standard or not). The restroom facilities were okay. People were respectful (in that they were not too loud). There we beautiful birds and it was a lovely visit, all around.

i have been there many times during the summer months. small but clean beach area. restrooms could be a little cleaner. and if you don't get there a little early parking will be a problem. also, the pavilions could be repaired some are falling apart and maybe new ones some added.

Decided to stop and watch the sun set. The sand is soft and cool. We came here in January so the water was too cold to get in. Just a really nice, quite spot to watch the sun go down.

Trauma. I went to this beach for Mother’s Day in 2019. My daughter had to use the women’s bathroom and decided to hold it until we found a store nearby with a bathroom. The entire walls and floor were covered in feces and soon and you walked in and huge, huge amounts of blood like puddles of blood. So much blood it looked like a murder occurred. The beach wasn’t as terrible. People talking about kicking someone out of their trailer and a bunch F bombs. The nature trail was the best part. It was actually beautiful and none of that. The nature trail really helped after that trauma.

Fabulous place! Very clean and lovely and quiet. We spent two days here after driving each day from I Drive and back in the evening. It was worth it. I love all the other beaches we’ve seen but this had amenities we could get to and not queue, the little open sided huts for picnic lunches and snacks. The water was incredibly calm, our 10 yr old niece spent all her time in the water, was great cos we knew she wouldn’t get past the barrier further out. Was fairly quiet, all the people were nice to talk to( mainly locals I think ) I really can’t pick on anything negative. All thumbs up from us. 😊

We were staying at the Plantation Inn at Crystal River and went to Ft. Island Beach and the Pier several evening to put our feet in the sand and watch the sunset. I even swam in the cold water in January. So inviting and invigorating. Loved it and highly recommend it.

This is a quaint little beach with lots of birds to watch, not too many people and beautiful sunsets. For the folks who don't like it, GOOD! Go somewhere else. We go a few times a year to catch the sunsets and a bite of fresh seafood. What is not to like?

This is the smallest beach I’ve ever seen! We went to Crystal River for Spring Break and decided to drive to see the beach one afternoon. It was very crowded and so tiny! The fishing pier could be nice except there were people there who are regulars and spend all day set up with multiple rods. The pier is small so you can’t really go out to the end because of all their gear and chairs. The boardwalk to get to the pier is nice. Honestly, I would not waste your day in Crystal River at this beach when there is so much more to do in the rivers and springs.

Clean sandy beach. Sunsets are spectacular especially if you view dolphins splashing and playing. Nice walking path to a fishing pier makes you feel like you are one with your surroundings

Is this beach still open? I’ve heard many are closed due to COVID-19.

Are tents allowed on the beach and if so, is there a size restriction?
Written August 8, 2018
Yes many people have tents up! Just be aware don't go to deep with stakes. This is a swim hole that was a swamp and they put 4 sand over it. Also make sure you take shower after as signs say so you don't carry any bacteria on you!
