We were delighted to find this lovely free public park right on the banks of the Animas River in downtown Durango. There were tables, benches, and green grassy areas for kids to play. Plus the river walk, with a pedestrian bridge is nearby so one can enjoy the river after their picnic.
We ate in our car in the parking area. We had found a nice shady place to park, but the picnic table in that area was filled with a large group of people, many of which were smoking. The drifting smoke forced us away from that spot.
Nevertheless we enjoyed our picnic and then had time to enjoy the river walk and watch kayakers and some individual rafters, as well as a few rafting tours.

We stopped in the lovely town of Durango after a day out hiking. The town was great. The river trail and the chance to hop in the river and cool off were the best part. We entered the water from a park along the trail a bit south of town. We then watched a kayaker practicing in the white water park, even though water levels were bit low in this (Sep) time of year.

My son and I rented inflatable kayak equipment from 4 Corners Whitewater and spent some great time on the Animas. We put in at Oxbow Park and took out at the Santa Rita park takeout. It was a blast and with water flow at about 1850, just the right level for an impromptu day on the river.

This is the second time on my visits here that I've walked along the river. Last time I was south of town coming north, but this time I picked up the trail on 9th street, downtown. Parking is available along this stretch or you can easily walk here from the central city area. It's a nice shady walk following the river as it begins to curve northeast. Some benches along the way and you'll even pass a stairwell which will take you up to the street and a Chinese restaurant. But if you continue following the trail system under the road you'll pass through some developed park areas and, crossing the river, eventually up to 32nd street where you can cross the bridge back to Main Avenue. Ride the trolley back into town from here. Or you can walk it. But it's another 2 miles to return.

I loved this walk! The river is in view the entire time. The walk is wide and mostly paved. We could take our dogs. You can start at different places. When says easy hike, really is, was mostly flat. This trail is not a serious hike, but can be done by all ages. Watch out for the bikes, skateboards, and runners. We went early in the day to avoid them.

This river feels so good after a long day on the trail! It is perfect for all types of activities. There are places to sit under a tree and relax, the kids can play at the park, and every one is hiking or biking the trail. It is so close to town, you can pop off the trail for a quick bite anywhere.

It is beautiful!

Passed along the river as we took a walk on the Animas River Trail. The river is clean and beautiful, and it's very peaceful to just watch as the waters move along and over the various rocks and rapids. Landscape around the river is enjoyable as well, since you can see a lot more greenery growing along the banks. We even experienced some of the local wildlife as we casually strolled along the trail.

We were in Durango the last part of September. The river was down a lot because of drought. It's still a very pretty river, but rafting was closed down. The river flows through Durango. There is a very nice walking path that goes along side the river through the downtown section. It's a wonderful walk. There are bridges so you can turn around and go the other way. The path is well shaded by trees.

Only because this review request specified Schneider park do I have to give a warning. The Animas River is of course great. Many of the town parks offer excellent river access. Butu Schneider is not one of them. This park is the usual hangout for the town's homeless population (because it is a very short to our soup kitchen). Avoid Schneider park and visit one of many other fine parks.

The Animas river trail in Durango follows the Animas river. For 6 miles, starting at 32nd street and going all the way to Walmart. Beautiful views along the path. And right now the river is RIPPING!
