Hop aboard a coal-fired, steam-powered locomotive that travels along the same railroad tracks that miners, cowboys and the early settlers of the Old West used over a hundred years ago. The route winds in and out of canyons and past open wilderness...more

Remember that this is a coal burning train and leave a large amount of dirty air . the views are outstanding and the
small town of Silverton is a bunch of fun. Suggest you take the bus back to Durango if smoke is a problem
The train ride from Durango to Cascade Creek is beautiful. You disembark right alongside the river where you can eat a picnic lunch at tables next to the water or under a covered pavilion with a fire pit. We had the opportunity to walk through...More
We loved the experience! The period locomotives and cars are magnificent, and rumbling along at 18 mph is a wonderful way to see the countryside, the snowy mountain scenery, and the wildlife.

Going to Silverton, the right side (or east side) of the car faces the most scenic water/gorge/forest/mountain view. Returning to Durango, the left side (or east side) offers the same view. Otherwise, in many cases, you are looking into the side of a mountain. But there is plenty of room in the cars, especially in the parlor car, allowing people to move from side to side. As I once wrote, on the return to Durango, I stood on the back of the last car for the entire trip so I wouldn't miss anything.
