Just another city park. Right? Well, no. This was the site of the first settlement in what eventually became Denver. It was called (oddly enough) Montana City, and it was established during the Pikes Peak Gold Rush along the South Platte River in 1858. The site was selected because of placer gold diggings along the stream. Montana City didn't "pan out" (pun intended), so the settlement was moved downstream to Auraria. The present-day park is fine for jogging, but a disappointment in terms of history. There's some old mining equipment and a replica of one of the original log cabins -- behind a high chain link fence that is mostly covered with ivy...so you really can't see much at all (in fact, I walked directly past the enclosure and missed it entirely). Even if you are into history, this site will be a disappointment. The location is 2300 South Platte River Drive, Denver.

The park has been improved, and features a few unique design features, including a fitness zone, water front area, and the bike path travels around the park.
However they did remove the original cabin structure that stood there for years...
maybe they thought it didn't fit the new part, but it was an important part of history.
