Visiting with my daughter and we went hiking on the Royal Arch trails in the Chautauqua park area. Coming from NY with an elevation of only 600 ft and then going to the Flatirons and hiking the trails there at about 7,000 ft knocked the wind out of me, but it wasn't too bad. Lots of stops to take in the beautiful views of Boulder and the various trees, plants and flowers that line the trails made it quite doable and enjoyable. I'd highly recommend it if you're in the area.

Seeing the sunset over the Flatirons was a perfect way to end our day. The trails were packed with hikers and runners - but even with that, it was serene, quiet, and beautiful. It is so close to downtown Boulder, it is a must see.

The hiking is very convenient to Boulder (vs. Rocky Mountain National, etc.). Parking is difficult to score - particularly on weekends one must also pay the meter rates. The rangers at the house next to the park are helpful to describe routes/trails. The maps are great, but it's still difficult to navigate at times because the trails are labeled and one has to infer from the map which trails one is on. The trail is relatively easy and scenic. It gets more difficult the higher one ascends.

Easy access to wilderness. Popular destination - but many hiking paths and options. Highly recommend.

We were confused as to where we were supposed to go. We never did find how to get close. We just drove to a roadside scenic view and took pictures. The Flatirons themselves are very cool. I just wish we could have found more informatin about them at a park headquarters or something.

It is sometimes rare to note that a geological experience can rate 5 stars without any doubts! And the amazing view of the flatirons from Chautauqua Park is incredible. First a little description is required.

The Flatirons consist of sandstone, sandstone conglomerate or arkose, of the Fountain Formation. Geologists estimate the age of these rocks as 290 to 296 million years; they were lifted and tilted into their present orientation between 35 and 80 million years ago. The Flatirons were subsequently exposed by water and wind erosion over the eons.

Hiking the trails is wonderful and so is spending some time down at the base of the park with a sketchbook in hand. So don't forget to see my sketches in the review.

Very long steep approach to the Flatirons.
Climbed 1st iron. We used a rope and gear to climb to the summit. It's steep enough where if you fall,, could be fatal or badly injured. Quit a few people free soloed. We saw a climber slip and slid down about 15 feet after getting started. No injuries. Minor scratches. Pack water. Full on sun exposure on the irons.

What more could you want? Fresh air and extensive meadows. Absolute peace and quiet. Must visit if you are a nature love or just enjoy vast, open and green spaces.

We really enjoyed it, despite the cold and snow. What a beautiful area to hike. If you are not used to the altitude, you may find yourself a bit breathless.
