This forlorn campsite.....is desolate. The town has shrunk painfully, after being a 1 company town for a century. It's ghastly sad, boarded up. The air smells from the factory, and ....there are no minerals to bother picking up
Held once a year on the second weekend in October and it is a fun event for the whole family! Bring cash. There are 3 field trips:
1) Saturday morning 9am - Mud Mineral field trip ($15 per car) - dig thru the mud to...More
Driving thru the town of Trona is a glimse of a mining town on it's way out. There is listed an Old Guest House Museum at 13194 Main st. However when we stopped by it was closed. The hours are Mon-Wed-Fri 9-12 and Tue-Thur-Sat 10-1...More
A drive through the towns can be depressing as the population is down greatly from the early boom era, but a stop at the Rest Area will provide a great deal of information about the area. Several groups have information boards here that provide a...More
We passed Trona on our way from Ridgecrest, CA to Death Valley NP. Trona is nothing special, we didn't stop but it was interesting to see the lake and the mineral industries. Just before Trona (from Ridgecrest) it's possible to see the Trona Pinnacles, after...More
Had to come to Trona on company business. The lake takes up a good portion of the Searles Valley and is mined for its mineral content. If you remember the TV show Death Valley Days and the 20 mule team wagons, this is where they...More
We passed through Trona and the Searles Lake in our drive to Death Valley. The landscape is pretty impressive. Unfortunately we couldn't stop but it was interesting to see all the industries around the lake and the great white salty surface.
On top of that...More
Stop at the rest stop near the middle of town on the lake shore. The local historical society has wonderful display panels that explain all the mining that has been going on at the lake since the Searles brothers discovered borax and shipped it by...More
You have to find gems and minerals at least a little interesting to do this weekend.
With that said!! It is totally cool. The 1st field trip Saturday morning 9:00 (get there early like 7:00-7:30) is to this black mud. So expect to get really...More
The mineral mining is done inside the Searles Valley Mineral plant. I do not think they allow people to walk into their property at other times. The property is fenced and gated. They already have the dates for this year... More
The mineral mining is done inside the Searles Valley Mineral plant. I do not think they allow people to walk into their property at other times. The property is fenced and gated. They already have the dates for this year so you could get better hotel rates right now.
I am doubtful that it would interest a 5 year old that much. One issue currently is the excessive heat. The temperature in Trona this time of year is fierce. Highs from 105 to 110 and lows never below 80 Degrees F. The... More
I am doubtful that it would interest a 5 year old that much. One issue currently is the excessive heat. The temperature in Trona this time of year is fierce. Highs from 105 to 110 and lows never below 80 Degrees F. The town of Trona is also pretty dead. He might like the abandoned buildings but some are not safe with raw nails and jagged metal laying around.
