About
This hundred-year-old wooden pier offers superb views of the bay and the surrounding mountains. Catch the sunset from the fishing platform at the farther end of pier, though be warned, it can get pretty busy at the height of summer.
As one of the most famous wharfs in the L.A. area, there are plenty of eateries, souvenir shops, street performers and things to do—don't miss the adjoining amusement park, which features a giant Ferris wheel, a high-tech arcade, and other thrilling rides. You can visit Santa Monica Pier, along with L.A.’s other iconic spots such as Beverly Hills and Hollywood on a guided tour.

The area
Address
Neighborhood: Santa Monica
Santa Monica is a coastal town that maintains a balance as a tourist destination and as an area with a thriving local culture. On the beach, bikers, roller-bladers, runners and walkers move along the famed bike path enjoying the beautiful Los Angeles weather. The solar-powered Ferris wheel at the Santa Monica pier spins high above the water, while park revelers scream with delight riding the roller coaster. Inland from the beach, Third Street Promenade bustles with shoppers and street performers, where every block seems to have a musical or acrobatic act drawing crowds giving Santa Monica both the feeling of a laid-back beach town and a major commercial hub.

- Kelly UAppleton, Wisconsin75 contributionsA One-Time StopWe had to go, it was our first time to Santa Monica, so we had to go to the pier. We went after dinner, so it was already dark. We walked the pier, lots of good people watching. There were people trying to get handouts or doing things to get money, but no one was pushy or made us uncomfortable, we enjoyed a few that were very talented. Lots of fishermen were down by the water. We went on the Ferris wheel, it was fun, nothing spectacular, more of a "we're here, so let's do it" thing. We played a game, and just took in the atmosphere. As we were leaving the pier, we heard karaoke at Rusty's and decided to stop for a drink which turned in to two and had a great time. Everything closes on the pier at 10, which was fine with us because we probably would've stayed a little longer and enjoyed another drink. I think it would have been fun to go around sunset to get the views and then still be able to enjoy the traditional fair atmosphere at night. There were a lot of very annoying and rude teenagers all over, guessing most were locals, didn't ruin our time, but they were definitely noticeable all over.Visited November 2022Written December 6, 2022
- Indah EdlightzOntario, Canada3,144 contributionsOne of top destinations in Southern CaliforniaSanta Monica Pier is fantastic place to visit both for tourists and locals. I'm sure locals don't come here on a busy weekend evening but our friends who live in Malibu come here quite a bit when its not crowded. It really is a fun and historic place... from being the last stop on Iconic Route 66 to the food shops available, street food, street performers and fantastic sunsets, this pier is huge with tons of life and activities.. You can easily spend 4 hours here so plan accordingly. The parking can be tricky as the weekends are very very busy but there are many underground nearby parking lots and if you don't mind taking a walk there is lots of parking deeper into Santa Monica away from the beach. The pier is just lots of fun and easily top destination when visiting Southern California. Also, the cost of trinkets and souvenirs is not that high since there is a lot of competition. Overall people are very friendly and patient.. everyone is here to enjoy themselves and eventually wait for the beautiful sunset.. so plan to get your spot on the pier to record an amazing California sunset.Visited October 2022Written December 7, 2022
- TripFan045368 contributionsSanta Monica Pier is a fun, beautiful placeThe Santa Monica Pier is a really fun place to spend some time. The amusement rides are cute and fun and it is just a really beautiful place. We were there a couple days after So Cal had strong Santa Anna winds so the visibility was amazing. Really cool place.Visited November 2022Written December 8, 2022
- Sabrina7 contributionsA change from the cityMaybe our expectations were too high, maybe the cold weather has taken a star off, but it is a fun place to be. There is a few rides, a couple of boutiques and many eating options. We ate Fish and Chip and Shrimp and chip at the Albright with a Mango flavored beer. That was excellent. The shrimps were huge. The beach is a long walk from the boardwalk so there is room for everyone. There are some training fixtures that are unusual but much appreciated and used. There is a nice cycling and walking path along the beach.Visited December 2022Traveled as a coupleWritten December 16, 2022
- SumsulDhaka Division, Bangladesh181 contributionsNice Timeout at Santa Monica PierLot of activities to do in the Santa Monica pier. Lot of amusement items. Good food and lots of options of all type and ranges, Many local hawkers are selling sandstone and other souvenior items. dont forget to burgain with them. If you want to go to the beach, would recommend to go a little far from the wooden pier as lots of waste is around the pier base area.Visited December 2022Written December 22, 2022

If you are traveling to LA, then plan a visit for relaxed time. If it is bright and sunny (except summer time), it will be really pleasant. - MyersFamilyTravelers149 contributionsGreat to see especially at nightWe visited at night and it was beautiful to see - the ferris wheel was lit up with cool LED lights that would change images. Typical pier with the expected food, shops and artists. We walked all the way to the end to look out on the ocean. We parked across the street which I felt was easier to navigate than the main lot.Visited December 2022Written January 2, 2023
- pickybiz356 contributionsIconic location, but crowdedIconic location but can get super crowded. Had a hard time doing rides because of huge crowds and long lines but kids had fun in the midway games. Park by the pier, not the promenade! The earlier you go, the less crowded….Visited December 2022Traveled with familyWritten January 7, 2023
- jehenson81Washington DC, District of Columbia22,263 contributionsStill Open for BusinessThe Santa Monica Pier doesn’t even let rain stop it from being open for business. It was a miserable day, but I wasn’t going to let it deter me from visiting and it gave me a unique perspective on the pier. The one nice thing is it wasn’t crowded. All the business were open, save the rides (aka Pacific Park). I visited the shops, saw the End of Route 66 sign and got drenched. Just motivates me to visit again in the future, so I can truly enjoy it and ride the Ferris wheel.Visited January 2023Traveled soloWritten January 11, 2023
- CompatibleMelbourne, Australia36 contributionsSanta Monica PierThe pier has a theme park, which has about 15 rides. The daily admission for one person is around 60 dollars a day, and for children under 7 is around 40 dollars a day. Unlike other parts of Los Angeles, it has a lot of people at night and has a lot of lighting, too. Near it about 100 meters is a large retail area which you can buy clothing and foods.Visited January 2023Traveled with familyWritten February 2, 2023

It's practically a living postcard. The iconic Ferris wheel stands tall, its colorful lights reflecting off the water at sunset – an Instagrammer's dream come true. Now, if you're a foodie, this place is a paradise. From the aroma of cotton candy to the sizzle of corn dogs frying, it's a feast for senses.

A must see when visiting LA! Lovely pier and a bucket list moment ticked off. From spending lots of time here on grand theft auto as a child to walking down here as an adult was a great moment!

The usual overpriced tacky shops and stands with overpriced restaurants and coffee shops !
Has a very unclean feel about the place especially the viewing platform at the end.
Something to tick of the list but won’t rush back.

Opened in 1908 with beautiful coastline views the Santa Monica Pier is exactly what one expects from a tourist venue, right down to the crowds and high prices. Suffice it to say there's probably nothing here you haven't already seen, but after a Funnel Cake and Dance Dance Revolution showdown at the arcade you probably won't care. Go, ride the Ferris Wheel and get your fortune read by Zoltar. Laugh. Smile. That's why you're here.

The Santa Monica Pier is a classic Southern California location and we visited with our family on a recent trip. Much of the parking by the pier is priced at an all day rate but we found a smaller lot down Seaside Terrace that was charged by the hour and considerably cheaper. We walked on the beach and up and down the pier to take everything in. We were there around an hour but it could certainly be an all day adventure.

Fun time walking at the pier. We enjoyed the sights, the interesting people, and the sea gulls. It was also nice walking along the beach off the pier. My favorite part was getting a fresh-cut tropical fruit cup and eating it while I walked on the beach. Don't miss the beach if you go to the pier!

We were staying in Shutters on the beach hotel in LA and this place is opposite and a walking distance from the hotel and visited this place on 19th May 2023. The pier is one of the many things to do in Santa Monica. Packed with family-friendly activities, vibrant street performers, restaurants and shops, the Pier also offers stunning views and over a century of history. The Santa Monica Pier, located in the middle of Santa Monica Beach, is one of the most iconic places in the city. Known as the final point of the legendary Route 66, it offers its visitors guaranteed fun thanks to its popular amusement park, aquarium, food stalls and incredible views of the coast. This place is worth visiting though could be crowded with tourists on the weekend.

Right next to the bridge is an asphalt parking lot with lots of good parking spaces. Price 15 USD. The bridge itself includes several shops and restaurants.

This is definitely a touristy place to visit, meaning it’s loaded with many who visit to see all the tacky vendors and listen to the loud, obnoxious “musicians.” If the County/City would clean that mess up, it would be very nice, as the views are beautiful… The view of the Pacific Ocean, the views of the beach, and the views of the waves breaking.
We did it because we’ve never been before, so it’s nice to mark it off the list. But with all the nasty, smelly people, people smoking weed, and tackiness, it’s hardly a suggested place to visit.

Can you sleep on the beach under pier

That's a hard NO. Not only is it unsafe due to the tides, but also LA/Santa Monica's homeless situation has resulted in a lot of beach patrols and monitoring

Hi! Thinking of visiting the Santa Monica Beach area next Summer. Considering hiring bikes and cycling the boardwalk down to Marina Del Rey and back. Question is, is it possible to lock and leave bikes during the trip if we see something we want to explore on foot? Do bike-hire companies hire out chainlocks for the bikes? Cheers!

Absolutely. Biking is a big thing to do. Found this one rental site: Bicycle Equipment
Each bicycle comes equipped with lights, a basket, a lock and a local map. Helmets are also available upon request.

Current status? Rides open, etc,? Wondering if it’s worth our visit on our way to other points in CA, or not. (3 kids under 11)

When we were there in June all the rides were open and restrictions have been lifted. Some restrictions may have been reinstated, such as requiring masks in public places. The pier itself is open, but unfortunately, as of 7/21 the rides are closed.

Hi I will be taking my teen son to Los Angeles this year and was considering staying near the Santa Monica Pier for our stay. We plan to do touristy things such as the beach, Wall of Fame, Hollywood Tours, Studio Tours. It seems so nice out at the beach how long is the drive into LA to do these things?
I know Disney is quite a ways away, would it be better to move down to Anaheim at the end of the trip? Any advise is welcome, thanks!!
