I have lived in Petaluma for many years. I have passed this place many many times and have always thought it would be a great place to visit. I was right it is a neat place to go back in time and learn about our California history. It only took us about an hour to see everything there as there isn’t a lot to see. It was a cheap easy day trip. The lady working there was very friendly.

Huge adobe building with wrap-around verandah; extremely interesting to see the "country home" of Vallejo.
The $3 ticket price is an incredible bargain -- and it includes THREE more sites in the town of Sonoma [if you visit on the same day].
After reading the displays, marvelling at the adobe & taking the shelf-guided tour, we drove a short distance into Sonoma & did, indeed visit all the other sites.
Hubby's 70th BD was very enjoyable.

It was fascinating to see how everyone lived in the prairie days. Wonderful if you aren't disabled. No elevator and difficult to walk in the dirt around buildings.

This turned out to be way better than I thought it would be! The Adobe is HUGE! None of us had ever seen one of this size so we were all very impressed, including the kids.
The grounds are well taken care of, as is the adobe. We were there for about 90 minutes and read all the information about each room. Very informative and interesting!
I think if I was ever in the area I would come back again just to marvel at the size of this old place. Definitely worth a stop if you are in the area, or, even if you are not!

A trip to the Petaluma Adobe is like stepping back in time to "Old California" before there were any Americans here. This is the "Casa Grande" that General Mariano Vallejo built and one of the places he called home. Walking through the buildings, you'll see the rooms as they might have appeared in the early 19th century. I highly recommend visiting during "Old Adobe Days", if you can, to see how life might have been lived. Kids will like it as they can make candles, weave baskets and talk to the docents who dress up in historical costumes and give tours. Otherwise, you should be sure to check the hours as state budget cuts have impacted the days and times it is open.

The Petaluma Adobe was General Vallejo's main ranch. It is a two story adobe (mud and straw) and wood building filled with artifacts. This is a good hour or two site set in a state park. Take a picnic. It will bring you back to Spanish/Mexican California before the Bear Flag revolt.

This is a pleasant way to pass an hour or so if you're in the vicinity.
There is a minimal entrance fee.
You walk around the adobe and look into the various rooms. Actually, it is interesting to see how things were 200 years or so ago.
The grounds are nice enough, and there are picnic tables if you're so inclined.
Some chickens or goats may be wandering the grounds. They're pretty use to people. (I got some great photos of the beasties.)
It's certainly not a "destination," but when out-of-town guests have had enough of the City, wine country, and the coast, this is a good place to wind down for a bit.

The Adobe is a reminder of the earlier days. We found the staff helpful. The text on the signs in the exhibits included quotes from writers of the day of Vallejo. Very interesting. The site is pretty, and the picnic ground is under the trees - although you door hear plane noise from the nearby Petaluma airport. We particularly liked the long cactus fence!

What a wonderful experience to walk in and out of the different rooms and imagine what it was like in the early days of California. The staff member whose name was Jennifer could not have been more helpful or informational. Great for both kids or adults.
