Frank Sinatra’s Neighbourhood walking tour #7
Oct 2021 • Couples
The regular tour schedule isn’t available until November so I called the Historical Society office and was able to book a private tour with the help of Steven. Only $40 each. Our docent, David, contacted me by email with directions for the meet up spot and to confirm length of tour - shorter or longer if we desired. What a fantastic walk! David is so knowledgeable about the history of Hollywood stars making Palm Springs their getaway home. He showed us so many examples of the mid century modern architectural style and the Spanish architectural style that make up much of Palm Springs. We even got to peek behind the gates of some of these beautiful homes. The walk is very easy, completely flat, no traffic. David kept us in the shade as much as possible but still bring water and a hat. Thank you David for a wonderful morning walk!

Architectural Gems tour
Oct 2021
Absolutely amazing tour! One of the best I've had. Jim was our tour guide and a wealth of information on Palm Springs, from history to his personal touches. You could tell he genuinely enjoyed what he was doing. My parents and I did this car tour and would recommend it for anyone. I had been to Palm Springs multiple times but had no idea of the history in the background and can't wait to hear more. To brag about Jim, our tour guide, more --> he was energetic, pleasant, friendly and just fun to be around. I also need to mention Kathy, who heads these tours, and was also a wealth of information and beyond helpful in finding us the tour for our needs. Overall, a great tour and a great organization. I look forward to doing more with them in the future!

We went by this building on Palm Canyon. It seems that the main purpose is to raise contributions. for the Society.

Rat Pack neighborhood walking tour
Jan 2020
We signed up for one of the Palm Springs Historical Society walking tours called "The Rat Pack". The stroll took us through a neighborhood where a number of Hollywood stars had houses back in their day. Pretty good tour with info about the various architectural styles in this area, some amusing stories about the stars and their antics while in Palm Springs. Pretty slow moving walk so no worries there. Not really in any way for kids. Lasted 2.5 hours. Bring water. No bathrooms.

History and design

This is the house of the first non-native resident in Palm Springs. There is a small amount of history and a bigger section dedicated to Raymond Loewy, a fabulous designer. Highly recommended.

Interesting site

I stopped in here and the docent at the desk was interesting and had stories to share. Small display, but when I visited, there was a temporary display about a local designer.

Bike tour is great!
Jan 2020
We did the bike tour with our kids, ages 9 and 11. It was perfect. We got to see great houses and learn a little about Palm Springs history. The kids had very little interest in architecture and didn't know who any of the celebrities were, but biking from place to place kept them interested. We did not spend a ton of time at any one location, which was great with kids--no time to get bored. Highly recommend. Our guide was terrific.

Bike Tour of Celebrity Homes
Jan 2020 • Friends
The Society offers a 2-2.5 hour bike tour through the neighbourhood of Palm Springs. Meeting point is 9 am, where you will be fitted to a bright yellow cruiser bike and sanitized helmet, courtesy of BIKE Palm Springs. A headset fits around one ear and off you go with guide leading the way.

Pros: First off, this was a lovely way to spend a couple hours and I am by no means fit. Most of the time is on flat ground with 2-3 spots that required some real effort to get up the inclines. The scenery is unreal. The guide was a local resident with a love of modernist architecture and he provided a lot of information.

Cons: On our particular ride, we were a group of 12 when 6 is ideal. Perhaps due to overbooking on this particular trip, our guide was not practiced at pulling the group together or catering to the people at the back. Sometimes he was up around the corner saying “over there is” but I couldn’t see what he was pointing to. Also, corners and distance impact the functions of the headset. The problem with 12 riders is that it is physically impossible for everyone to remain close to the guide. My only other “con” was the guide’s clear disdain for the architectural/land use decisions made by local indigenous people who own tribal lands within the city. Tours are a perfect opportunity to acknowledge those who came first and their contributions to the city that stands today.

Overall I would recommend this tour provided the spaces are limited. Also, the BIKE shop had good rental prices and e-bikes if you want to meander on your own.

Local Artists!
Dec 2019
Nice art gallery / co-op of local artists here, along with benches and plenty of outdoor places to sit. Art is always changing so it is always a treat to re-visit!

Wonderful walking tour of Frank Sinatra's neighborhood
Nov 2019
Dean was very knowledgeable and made the walking tour enjoyable. At the end of the tour I could recognize a few of the top Modernist architects.
We will do different tours in the future.
Thank you Dean
